Getting guild invites while offline?

I received a "welcome" message to a trading guild I was on the waiting list for, but I didn't receive the actual invite notification.
Now, I was in 5 guilds at the time, but I was under the impression that guild invitations go to your notifications tab when you are in 5 guilds (my notification tab is empty). This is how it always worked.
I was offline when this message was sent though. Am I still supposed to receive the notification while offline, or do I need to be online?

✭✭✭✭✭altho strange to some, for me it is welcome.
in other MMO's i have played you could whisper people, send group invites, and even guild invites to offline friends and even just people who you could spell thier @ name.
i enjoyed it, and i miss it.
but it does not lessen my love for eso, i just miss that i was able to do that in other MMO's.0
