Is it Riften or Windhelm or is it any place else?

Currently trying to figure out, where to buy my Nord his new home (large or medium)

    Do you like snow? Windhelm.

Do you like more temperate forested areas? Riften.

There's a really big home right outside Riften.
Been there, got the Molag Bal polymorph.

Well Windhelm is bigger and more important story wise but Riften is the final Pact Zone, so a lot of players just end up there so it's a lot more busy.

I vote for Windhelm as a main city. It was the first city that was settled by the Nords when they came down from the continent of Atmora.

Well Solitude is the capital of Skyrim in the eponymous game so that would be the "main" Nord city, but it doesn't exist in ESO (and my history is patchy as to whether it had been founded yet in the Second Era). So we may see it one day, we may not.

In the meantime, as said, it's kind of down to how much you like or dislike snow and ice. :)

If you haven't already checked them out on the PTS I strongly recommend previewing both houses (and maybe some others) before you make a decision.

I thought I knew exactly which house I'd buy just from reading the list of available houses - the small one in Daggerfall. That idea went out the window as soon as I previewed it and realised it was just one square room and I had to switch between the free inn room and the house to notice the difference in size. I ended up choosing an orc house which I would never have guessed I'd like.

If I remember correctly the medium and large nord homes are actually the same design, but the large one has a courtyard in front and a stable/barn to one side. I'm not saying that makes it a better choice, just that it's something to think about. Based on discussions on the PTS some people consider outside space absolutely essential and others consider it a waste of space/money.

I have to say. I'm down with DC. Love the blues but oddly enough my favorite zone is Eastmarch. Something about that autumn vibe.

    Windhelm is Nord capital btw.

It was not the first city settled by the Nords. Saarthal was the first city but it was destroyed by the Snow Elves. AFTER they wiped the Snow Elves from the surface of Skyrim and forced them underground, Ysgramor built Windhelm in honor of one of his sons who died on the journey from Atmora.

Longest standing human city on Tamriel? yes.
    First? No.

And to you. Solitude didn't become the capital of Skyrim until far into the Third Era sometime after the rule of Queen Potema. Before then, Windhelm was the capital. The capital has changed a few times however, once in Winterhold, and once in Whiterun for a time. The Capital is always the residence of the High King, who is elected among his peers. It just so happens to be that before Solitude became the seat, the High King was almost always elected from Windhelm.

The house just outside of Nimalten in The Rift might be worth a look.

(I think that may be a small one though, it still looks pretty nice regardless).

In this time period though, both are technically correct. Windhelm is the capital of the Kingdom of Eastern Skyrim and Solitude is the capital of the Kingdom of Western Skyrim. Eastern Skyrim (ruled by the heirs of Freydis) are a signatory of the Pact, Western Skyrim (ruled by the heirs of Svartr) are not.
