Need help on a Templar Build

jesse.liss_ESO
I decided to try and build a Magicka Templar, because I play solo, and lots of people said that was a strong solo build.
Problem is, the guides I find for building one seem more geared towards Veteran PVP or high level dungeons. I can't find one that starts from low level and works its way up.
Like what attributes I should be leveling up. What kind of gear I should be looking for and enchantments as I level up. All the guides talk about max level gear you get from end game content.
I was able to gleam what skills I should be getting by working backwards from those, but I'd like some build advice for a newbie if anyone can share some.

    ^^^^

The guide above is just fine. For the most part, solo needs 4 things. Puncturing sweeps, channeled focus, blazing shield and Radiant and you can go with the radiant morph that heals you.

With those skills you will kill plenty, can survive and do just fine.

I only ever play PvE and Quest, and I play primarily Solo. I run a Magicka Templar as my Main, so I'll share my build with you.

For Gear: 5x Julianos (2x Swords, Head, Shoulders, Chest); 4x Seducers Gloves, Waist, Legs, Boots. 3x Destruction Mastery set (Jewelry; Necklace, 2x Ring)

Attributes: Everything goes into Magicka pool.
Mundus Stone: Personally, I use The Apprentice; but The Ritual and The Mage do just as well.

    Skills:

Spam skill: Stabby-sticks (Biting Jabs, use the Morph that Heals)
    Gap Closer: Explosive Charge
Finisher: Jesus-beam ( Radiant Destruction, I use the Moroh that does more damage overall, but the one that Heals works just as well)
Support: Mage Light (Mage's guild skill line)(Use the Inner Light Morph, it helps your Magicka)
Support: Solar Flare (nice distance combat starter, hits for decent damage, slows your enemies by 40%, and has a Morph that allows it to split to hit 3 enemies at once, perfect for starting a battle vs. a Mob)

This build has carried me through... pretty much everything the game can throw at me. The amount of Self-Healing is absurd, and the sustain from the gear sets and magicka boost do wonders for your over all damage.

Just make sure to put Divines on every piece of armor, and Sharpened on your weapons.

I was using this guide kind of as a base, but I'm still confused on some of it, because it seems to focus on end game stuff.

Like for gear, I can't get that kind of gear at level 10. So do I want gear that will increase Magicka/Spell Damage?
I went with Destruction staff, which seems to make me pretty much impossible to kill, since it restores my magicka whenever I use the power spell. Is there any passive abilities that speed that up, so that it builds up faster?

I was planning on going secondary dual wield swords, too, when that option becomes available.

Thanks Uriel, for pointing out the attributes. I had no idea what to do with that. The guide posted talks about Champion points, which I don't know what they are, but not attributes.

I gotta say, I really like the Templar. I've only used dragonknight before, and it seemed like it took forever to kill 1 enemy. With the Templar, I am killing multiple enemies in seconds.

I was lvl 8 last night, and came across one of the chain events, can't remember the name. No one else was there except for 1 lvl 9 guy, and me and him finished it off. It was pretty fun.

That is my only problem with Deltia builds, is that they are practically end game content. Even his builds for leveling. Truth is that you are going to have to do everything in the game. You are going to have to get every single skyshard, and do every single quest, or it is at least better to do that.

My main character is in progress with the PvE Atlas Templar tank build Deltia made, but at the same time I am doing all the research and am investing in all of the crafting skill lines (it is possible to do). Main goal is to have him all set so then my characters can have anything they need made for them.

Anyone else I made is because I am out of bank space.

If I can offer some advice.

    DONT start with a build
You should try most (not all) of the class skills as you level up in different situations

Get a solid feel for them (most, not all)

Then get a feel for those you never tried at 45-50
Why, because things change a lot

Because you're playing mostly solo, I'd argue that you don't need any weapon skills at all

Stat wise. At 50 you'd prob want at least 40 in mag and if needed some in health but I didn't put any in....however I can get one shot without a shield up very easily.

Gear wise. At least 5 light

But I'd suggest not looking at builds until after you hit 50 and unlock all skills and morphs because nerfs come rough to Templar and that's been my main since 2013 closed beta.

Builds are great IF you have a feel for what's good for you

When you say "power spell" do you mean heavy attack? If so - Restoration Staff will also restore your magicka and gives you access to some nice healing over time spells which can be useful when soloing stronger enemies (like world bosses etc.) So you may want to look into trying that out.

My best advice for effective soloing though is to use puncturing sweep because it heals you for 40% of the damage done and works against multiple targets - making it very effective against large groups of dangerous enemies that can do a lot of damage.

Other than that - for regular soloing you can just burn most things down before they even get to you by using a combination of your Dawn's Wrath abilities. I personally like to just hit them with a Dark Flare, Reflective Light and then finish them off with a Radiant Oppression. That is usually enough to quickly finish off any of the regular enemies I encounter.

Like for gear, I can't get that kind of gear at level 10.

Stop Looking at Build Guides. They will only confuse you and frustrate you right now. Your leveling a character, build does not matter. Gear does not matter, as long as you are wearing something. Each zone drops a Magic set, a Stamina Set and a Tank set. Wear the Magic set stuff you get. Or, ask in Zone chat for someone to make you some Seducer Gear with the Training Trait, tip them if they do. If your PC/NA, send me an email to @Nestor and I will help you out.

Anyway, Leveling is not about a build. Why? your buffed by the game big time. Take advantage of that to level your character so that it is flexible come end game and you can create any build you want. Also, using the Dropped sets as you go along will help you to figure out if a Regen set is better for you than say a Critical Chance set.

So, read the Spoilers ahead and heed and you will be happy in 40 or so levels:
While leveling you should be preparing your self for the future, not your build (as that will change). So:

    1. While leveling, have one class skill from each class on your bars at all times. Classes level the slowest, so get them done now.
    2. Have at least one weapon skill on your bar at all times
    3. Have a flex or support skill you want to level at all times
    4. Once the skill gets to the Morph stage, then put another one on the bar to level that rather than take the morph.

Your not going to have the best DPS now, but you will have the most flexibility later. You can apply this to both bars equally or some other way, but this is the best method while leveling 1 to 50. Reason, the game handicaps you right now to make you stronger than you really are. So, take advantage of that. You don't need the optimal skill load out, you need the optimal leveling load out.

Also, try to wear at least one of each weight of armor to get all those lines leveled.

Once you get up to or near 50, you should have all the skills that matter at Morph stage, your armors at 50 and most important, your classes at 50. Then, you can optimize your build.

Some below is a repeat of above
    1. Have one class skill on your bar at all times, swapping them out once the skill reaches Morph stage. Worry about your Morphs later.
    2. Have one weapon skill on your bar at all times, again until Morph stage
    3. Wear a mix of all 3 armor types so they all level about equally
    4. From L1 to L20, invest in attack skills and actives
    5. From L20 to L35 start investing in Passives and Support Skills
    6. From L35 to L50 start investing in Morphs (but only if all your class skills are at the Morph Stage), Passives and Crafting Skills
7 From CP10 to CP160 try out dropped sets to see which ones fit your playstyle, don't worry about traits right now, fill in passives and actives you may have missed
    8. Grind on Dolmens to level your Fighters Guild, or find the Lore Books to level Mages Guild
    9. Do some stealing to level Legerdemain, best source for money in the game
    10. Decon every piece of gear you get that you are not going to use immediately to level equipment crafting, no need to invest skills points until Champ Ranks.

Finally, I think the first time you level a character, you should just play the game, do the quests and the content and enjoy the ride. But, if you want to level to say CP160, then do the content so you get end game leveled rewards, then see this for a way to go through a zone without doing anything important
One thing to remember, a lot of guides are written with idea to maximize production to the Nth Degree, which can make sense when your leveling your 8th character. But it can really suck the fun out of the game on your first character worrying about it.

    Here is a better approach:

The beauty of the game now is each zone drops a Magic Set, a Stamina Set and a Health (Tanky) Set. You can do the content in the zone and get the gear you need with some nice bonuses to help your characters. It drops in at least Green and Blue is common once you get around the 30;s. A lot of times it drops in the Training trait, but you really don't need to have every single item in Training. Just prefer it as a trait, but wear what you get. When you are done in that zone move on to the next and start replacing the gear with the stuff from that zone. You can usually go about 10 levels over the gear before it starts to get noticeable as needing to be replaced. If you get something that is higher level than your wearing, just swap it out as you go along. Again, don't worry about the traits while leveling. The game is buffing you anyway.

As for leveling crafting, you should do that, but don't be in a hurry to invest all the skill points you need for it. You need those points for combat and defense. Just decon all the loot you have left over after selling to cover any repairs you do. Research Traits on items you think you are going to use. Then do the other traits later on.

Let me give you an example of what I did with my last two leveling characters.

    1. I collected all the Skyshards in the zone. I avoided any and all quests other than those that show up in the delves that have skyshards.
    2. I would farm the dolmens a few times to get set jewelry that helped my character
    3. I would do the Public Dungeons including all the bosses
    4. Then I would move to the next zone.

In doing this, I could fully gear up my character with level appropriate stuff, and it was helpful gear. May not have been the best, but you don't need the best while leveling. Then, I had all the content quests left for me once I reached CP160 as those can give you sweet Set Drops in good traits you want. And, Quest Experience is huge for gaining CPs once your past CP160. Kind of a waste before that.

    No problem.

    To expand:

When you get to the CP ranks; I put most all of my CP points like this:

    Mage

    Ritual sub-constellation:
Thaumaturge - increases the damage of damage over time effects, which helps with your Biting Jabs, Solar Flare, and Radiant Destruction

    The Apprentice sub-constellation:
Elemental Expert, Spell Erosion, and Elfborn

    Thief

    The Shadow sub-constellation:
Shade - Because a bit of Stealth-help never hurt anyone

    The Lover sub-constellation
Arcanist - Boosts your Magicka regen

    The Tower sub-constellation:
Magician - Reduces the Magicka cost of abilities

    Warrior

    The Lady
    Elemental Defender - for defense

    The Steed
Spell Shield - for even more defense

That's how I break down my CP expenditures, and it does wonders for my particular Magicka Templar build.

    I hope this further helps.

If you want a starting Templar build, craft Seducer or Magnus. These are low trait requirement sets and good for your sustain. Fill in the rest with the light armor dps set found in almost any overland zone, particularly do anchors for the jewelry. Read the tooltips and pick what looks good.

You'll probably want to use duel swords and destro staff, sharpened if you can, since you can heal without a restro staff. But you can substitute one in if you like. Focus on sun fire, RD, nova, puncturing sweep, javalin, blazing spear, blazing shield, breath of life, repentance, ritual of retribution, and focus channel. Also look into the mage's Guild for buff skills and meteor and the destro weapon line. Wear at least 5 pieces of light armor, get your health comfortably high, and put the rest into magicka.

    You can build from there.

    Thanks for the help everyone.

From the consensus it looks like I shouldn't focus so much on the build right away until later levels.

The few other MMOs I've played were very unfriendly for solo players, so unless you followed very specific rules for leveling, you were kind of at a huge advantage. It sounds like that isn't the case with ESO.

You guys gave me plenty of info to work towards, though, so it will allow me to go in with a bit of a plan.

Luckily I kind of accidentally already started on some of the things, like wearing 1 piece from each weight, coincidentally because I was just wearing what I was getting during drops, though I knew from the guides that I should focus more on light pieces.
I'll look up these Seducer and Magnus sets. I've got the game for PC and PS4, but I mostly play on PS4 because that's the system I got the DLC on.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll process all this info and start leveling.

My PSN is IcarusTheFallen....I really hate my psn name, it sounds so emo. I made it right after I fell off a building and I was depressed and medicated, and I went all goth when making my name. I fully regret it.
