Elves eye size in trailers vs in-game.

There is something that is really confusing me. In elder scrolls trailers elves have regular sized Irises, while in Elder scrolls games they take up almost the intirety of the eye.

So my question is which one is the right one lore wise?

Because in the older elder scrolls games dark elves and other elves are seen with regularly sized eyes. But in Skyrim and ESO elves have big iris sizes.

I need this information as I like to draw, but I keep getting frustrated when I look for references and see official sources draw elves with big irises and elves with regular sized irises.

What's the right lore correct eye size for elves!?

Whatever the artist decides to do.

Elven Vampires get normal eyes in a red color in ESO.

The dark elves in the trailer are supposedly half-human.

Because whoever did the trailer knew the elves' eyes look creepy in the game, so they fixed it. >:)

The game is the source material, so it is most likely the one that is lore-accurate.

The eyes on the trailers are either like that to prevent the characters from looking too uncanny (because big irises do look uncanny when digitally applied to actual people) or because real elves were unavailable and they had to record it with humans instead
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

The trailers are terrible at depicting mer. It's blatant man-washing.

But as far as references go, for general face structure I'd advise Morrowind, for eyes you have a bit of leeway between Morrowind and Skyrim.

I think it has a lot to do with the camera in game. Because most people use 3rd person view the camera is further back and to accentuate the difference between elves and humans, the artists probably exaggerated the elves eyes in game a bit so people can see the difference at a glance.

The perspective in a trailer is a bit different and the physical difference between elves and humans is a lot easier to see given the level of detail, perspective, resolution, etc. So no need for a higher level of exaggeration in cinematics.

For example this shows the evolution of elf eyes through the Elder Scrolls Games:

The first TES games elves have regular sized eyes. In skyrim was when the elves eye size increased.

Why can't yhey be consistant :'(

I'm pretty sure the higher ups at marketing told the artists that you need to make the dunmer more human looking because the people watching the superbowl will be confused and scared by these angular angry looking faces.

Some folks (not me, so much) complained that Oblivion elves looked like humans with pointed ears. Bethesda responded to this criticism by giving elves a more distinct look in Skyrim. Devs really can't win sometimes.

Naryu in the trailer definitely had a nose job, chin implant, fat injections into her cheeks, botox to plump her lips, and probably a day before the trailer was filmed she was in L.A. getting a pedicure and manicure with Selena Gomez.

Personally loved the alien appearance of the elves in Skyrim and Morrowind with rather pronounced brow ridges. The world of TES feels like a very specific place, grounded in the detailed history where these Mer are much more alien than generic high fantasy elves, with unique and compelling cultures.

I was blown away by the character design work of Dennis Mejilliones on Skyrim - if they ever make something like a feature film, I'm hoping they end up resembling his elves:

Naryu is my Favourite ESO Character so I was internally screaming when I heard her voice in the trailer then saw her beautiful CJI face afterward.

Another reason why I want a solid answer is I'm tired of family members and friends seeing Naryu or dunmer in general and saying "What's wrong with her face?!", "Why are her eyes red?!" Or "Their faces are scary". Makes fangirling about one's favourite NPC with non-TES fans really difficult. :D It's as if someone just insulted your significant other. :s

While you are wondering about the eyes of Elves, I am still wondering why Khajiit and Argonians had beast legs only in Morrowind.

Will we encounter beast-legged Khajiit and Argonians in Morrowind or will it remain as mysterious as Akavir?

To each their own but I personally thought it was disgusting and immediately got mods to change it. In ESO they're fine though, but in Skyrim it was like they were permanently aged into their 60s and had metal rods in their brows and chins to make them more pronounced.

Agreed. I feel like ESO is the only Elder Scrolls games where you can make somewhat good looking and undiformed characters. In skyrim I was always frustrated because everyone had weird wrinkles and brow ridges, humans included. I was playing on console at the time so no mods for me.

Games should put in mind that not everyone wants their chacter in an RPG to look like a hideous monster. Me being someone who loves character cusomization was frustrated playing Skyrim, fallout3, fallout4 & fallout new Vegas with hideous characters.

Anyway, back on topic. I think the ESO got the elven look right. It's just the matter of the eyes that keeps being inconsistant through out TES games.

I understand. It really sours the experience for me if I cannot make a somewhat pretty looking character in the games I play. Lack of character customization and/or just awkward looking character models have caused me to ditch more than one game in the past. I know I'm probably in a minority here, but I can't help it. It's just too distracting for me.

With ESO it's just on the edge of what's tolerable for me with the weird gangly armed postures and abundance of overly harsh faces.

When humans record as elves, one of the things they no doubt do is put on the longer elven ears.

But how do elven actors handle the ear dilemna when they're recording as humans? :o

Quick quips for those pesky questions:

"What's wrong with her face?!" -Nothing. Your eyes are defective.

"Why are her eyes red?!" -She's a Dunmer, that's normal. *roll eyes and shake head here*

"Their faces are scary" -You scare easy. Chicken! Ha ha!
