Vvardenfell: Expansion or DLC?

With the teaser trailer being release and the obvious cgi of the teaser, do you all think this could be an expansion for the game. A 40 dollar price point not covered by ESO plus? Or do you think it will be same old same old .

There is also a (rumor?) that Pete Hines will be on the show to discuss the future, and seeing as how last time he was on they announced the change of their model to b2p , do you think this could mean a possible change in their system, Hinting at an xpac or f2p possibly ?

Let me know your opinion down below

They are just hyping up a DLC because it's Morrowind, it's the most nostalgic of TES games. Notice that they want people to share their reactions to the announcement on twitter or something. So they can get up in the glorious "trending" list. In hopes of a new player surge or returning players.

This isn't a bad thing, just a way of PR these days. I don't expect to be shocked, but people that have left the game and do not know what's in development might be shocked and come back. Simply due to it being the Vvardenfell zone.

They'll play the music and tug on your nostalgia and reel you in.

I make it sound sinister but it's fun to want to be nostalgia blasted I guess!

Unless they f it up. Hopefully they baby the *** out of Vvardenfell and really do their homework. To see a tie-in inbetween Nerevar & Nerevarine would be absolutely amazing imo. The tribunal murdered Nerevar in 1E 700, ESO is set in 2E 583 and Nerevarine fulfilled the prophecy in 3E 427. So we are in the sweet middle and they have a lot of potential here.

F2p...you mean ESO turning to Free to play? Highly doubt it, at least yet, the game is selling too well to change to free to play.

Im hoping it turns into DLC, don't want to pay the full price I paid for ESO just for an extra area (likely will buy it though). People are speculating it'll be an expansion due to the amount of content they THINK will exist (yes, they haven't said "Yes, that id Vvardenfell. That's what's coming out", all they did Is a 9 second video. Either way), but that doesn't say much. Let's compare it to wrothgar shall we ? One giant area, the price I paid for it was well deserved since it added countless hours of more exploration, quests and completion, plus, it was big. Wrothgar has: 2 public dungeons, several towns, a solo trial, three set crafting station. This is around the amount of content a normal area has. Vvardenfell (if it comes out) would be around the same thing (just speculation). One or two public dungeons (maybe even a new one), few cities, new hours of questing and fun, and a few set crafting stations. Why should it sell as an expansion when speculative, it has the same things Wrothgar did? (and Wrothgar is doc for those who don't know) just because it came from a previous game? Just doesn't make sense (Though if they did sell it as an expansion it'd still made a lot of money)

    Sorry for the long post

Unless they are changing this part of their business model aswell, I don't see why they would distinguish between what you define as an Expansion and a DLC.

Size isn't really relevant as ZOS can price DLC however they like, ESO+ is going way beyond the call of duty at this point, they shouldn't start making exceptions to the Plus DLC rule.

And Pete is probably on because of the Morrowind Anniversary.

DLC is defined by its delivery method, an expansion pack additional content. Technically all DLC's have been expansion packs.

If the definition of an expansion pack in this discussion is a large DLC not included in ESO+ then I very much hope they don't do it.

No competitor on sight, think they should push forward with Expansion instead of F2P. I totally get it, ESO has been rough road but lets face the facts, its this or WoW atm.

I agree with this. Back before "DLC" blew up, we had expansion packs. You had to buy a physical copy. Now days I never see or hear the term since everything is digital now, so it's all DLC.

I also like to seperate the two(DLC being small content, Expansion being big) However, I don't think all of the industry does the same.

Though I wouldn't mind Vvardenfell being an expansion as long as it is worthy of the name. If it's been being developed for two years with daily attention and progress and makes Wrothgar look like Bleakrock Isle then I am all for pricing it and seperating it from 'DLC'

Why an expansion though? Since (speculative) itll offer the same things Wrothgar did? Unless they add so much more, I doubt itll be sold as an expansion

I have a feeling it's a major expansion with cp limit raised to 180 and a new top tier crafting material and a bunch of awesome new sets only to be farmed in the new lands.

I'm inclined to think that with this much fuss it's going to be a full price expansion.

They wouldn't want people recording and sharing their reactions if it was a F2P transition.

But what would a full expansion look like?

    Vvardenfell
    Clockwork City
    Mephala's Realm
    New Class
    PVP Battlegrounds/Arenas

    Maybe?

All we can do is speculate until later today.

I would also assume if it is an expansion that it'll get a longer PTS cycle than normal updates.

I'd say an expansion pack consist in one large zone (maybe the largest to date) or several large and medium zones, among with new gameplay elements such as spellcrafting, maybe new weapons and skill lines, perhaps a new class as well. Higher CP items aren't excluded at all. It should include both a trial and one or more group dungeons among public ones. It should be huge!

Everyone really needs to calm down. Given the track record of previous updates (and all the issues and problems they've brought with them) I'm not holding my breath for something out of this world. I hope I'll be pleasantly surprised but the reaction of some people on here, it's like they choose to ignore the problmes that come with each update. Fingers crossed though.

Lets add ponies to the equation as well then, shall we? New weapons its unreal, the weapons we have now are good and decent. Skill lines also doubt it, and don't even get me started on the new class. Higher CP items perhaps (though they haven't said anything about raising it, even in the past). Spellcrafting is possible since they have said its on their backprojects, new gameplay elements would not be appreciated by many and trials and dungeon is likely to happen.

Though to be honest, I think the zone will be as big as Wrothgar (and highly doubt, it will be the biggest zone since that title is held onto Cyrodill

Yeah..thats something ive been saying for a while now, but keep getting bombarded by people who cant prove their point by simply posting "HYPE TRAIN" and those sorts of pictures, so I gave up on making them see reason. In my opinion, don't hype it too much or itll lead to disappointment

    This is my thinking too.

The two additional releases for Morrowind - Tribunal and Bloodmoon - were called expansions. The three for Skyrim - Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn - were called DLC. The only difference is that when Morrowind was released you had to buy an extra disc in a box to get it because if they'd tried to get people to download that much data they would have been laughed at. The Skyrim ones were also offered on a disc, but by then I think it was seen as an alternative for those with bad internet.

And Oblivion was literally right in the middle. A big part of the whole 'horse armour drama' was because DLC was being hyped as the new big thing in gaming and that was hyped as one of the first games to get DLC, so everyone was expecting something big and dramatic, while Bethesda quite sensibly decided to test the system with something small before they got too ambitious, so for a while it looked like a lot of fuss over nothing. (The other part of the drama was the price of course.)

So I tend to think of the distinction as fairly arbitrary: DLC can be an expansion and an expansion can be downloaded. But some companies do choose to label some releases as one and some as the other and in my experience the difference is usually the size, and more rarely the type of content.

All of which means Vvardenfell is most likely to be DLC. From what we've seen so far it's most likely to be "just" another new zone like Wrothgar. (And for anyone thinking it must be much bigger because it was the setting for an entire game please see Highrock and Cyrodiil.) For them to call it an expansion and claim that's something distinct from DLC I think it would have to include both more content and some extra stuff like a new class or new mechanics.

So if it is an expansion the good side would be that it might explain the severe lack of new content recently - they haven't been releasing much because they've been working on one big release, and when it comes out it will give us a lot more than just one new zone. The downside is that means we've been waiting longer for the same amount of content we could have had either way, and everyone (including ESO Plus subscribers) are likely to have to pay for it without the 'pick and choose the bits you like' aspect of smaller DLCs.

But expansions do tend to go over better for making it seem like the developers are still supporting a game. For some reason even if they release DLC regularly, with all the stuff that would be in an expansion, after a while people will start complaining that there's nothing big coming and say things like "the game is on life support" as if you can only do so much DLC before it doesn't count any more and you have to do something more dramatic.

Which makes sense for a single-player game where changes to mechanics and even bug fixes tend to be very limited, for anything big you need to wait for the next game in the series. It doesn't work like that with MMOs but people still seem to have that mentality.

I think it's probably just a DLC, but they want to make a big deal because it is morrowind. They'll probably show a trailer, and then talk afterwards about things that are just like the Morrowind game.

If it IS an expansion, and not covered by the subscription... I'll be cancelling mine.
