View text chat activity while on siege?

I don't know if this is an issue on PC, but on console it seems you can't view text chat while on a siege.
I understand the mechanics of controlling siege weapons would prevent you from typing, but being able to at least see the chat log while defending on a siege would be useful. Players will be calling out wall percentages, another wall down on the other side of the keep etc. and all those people defending get rolled because they were on siege and unaware.
