Returning to ESO - Questions

nathanthehawkerb16_ESO
Hi, I used to play ESO but I took a short break after reaching lvl 50 when I found out I had to level through the two other factions' zones and never returned. I'm planning on starting a new character this time around and I have some questions.

Is the destro-staff light-armour build still as OP as it was? I was hearing about people not getting into groups unless they respecced to this. I also vividly remember a PvP scenario when we (EP) were sieging an AD castle and suddenly a guild of light-armour destro-staff DC's come along and roflstomp us both. Has anything new taken place of this?

Secondly, are bows viable now? For a long time I'm sure bows (and stam builds in general I think) just weren't viable. I'm not sure whether I want to spec into bows but it'd be nice if the option is there. I'm considering taking a bow spec of sorts.

Finally regarding money making, what are the advantages or disadvantages of taking generic crafting abilities like cooking + alchemy for a first character as opposed to take class - appropriate abilities that will help you get gear (such as smithing + enchanting for heavy armour characters)? Does the thieving skill (can't remember the name) bring in a decent amount of cash or have any benefit (other than being fun)? And do you have any money making tips?

Thanks everyone

From these questions, it sounds like you stopped playing back in 2014.

It is no longer the Elder Staves Online. Balance has improved tremendously since launch, and at this point you can make a viable pvp build with any of the four classes, with your choice of medium, light or heavy armor. Yes, bows are quite strong and even have an ultimate ability now.

For making gold, I find it easiest to simply go around to different guild traders buying items cheap and then reselling them higher. Haven't tried crafting gear for sale to people, but I think it ends up being kind of costly as you need to invest in buying style motifs. You can also craft potions, cook food and enchant glyphs for sale.

Picking pockets or just straight up killing NPCs and taking their loot can yield around 20k per day. Buying and reselling items can generate a lot more.

If it helps, One Tamriel has really opened things up. You can still level through the other zones if you want to, but if you don't, you can walk away from Cadwell and do just about anything else you want.

I think the current meta is stamsorc? But that's going to change in the upcoming balance patch, so... Honestly, I don't bother to keep up with the build-of-the-month. :p

The bottom line is that you're not going to get kicked for not being the current OP build... and if you do, it's because the people kicking you are dumb. Gather some friends and good guilds, and you won't have to worry about being kicked because you're not running whatever that quarter's OP build is.
Secondly, are bows viable now? For a long time I'm sure bows (and stam builds in general I think) just weren't viable. I'm not sure whether I want to spec into bows but it'd be nice if the option is there. I'm considering taking a bow spec of sorts.

Not so much. See this thread, if you haven't already. Stam builds are fine (don't mind the moaning that the upcoming balance patch is going to "kill" them... this happens every patch where the classes are tweaked). Bows, in particular, are pretty weak as a primary weapon. If getting kicked from groups is one of your concerns, don't use bow as a primary weapon.

Honestly, there are so many great dropped sets now that you shouldn't need to craft armor and weapons while leveling your character. Provisioning, meanwhile, is a very handy skill to have.

That said, research is a pain-in-the-butt time-sink, so if you intend to eventually craft armor or weapons on that character, might as well start researching now.

As for thieving? Yes, it gets you a decent amount of cash. It's not as lucrative as guild trading, but it's pretty easy and, as you said, fun. My thief pulls in 12k gold in about two hours' worth of work. (Though you'll start at a lower rate, since lower legerdemain means less impressive drops, and you won't have as many slots at the fence). Definitely worth the time. :)
    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

(Signature idea shamelessly stolen from Abeille.)

    Welcome back!
Much has changed, including that there are now stamina and magicka morphs for certain class skills, and weapons have ultimates.

I hope you enjoy the game as you rediscover it.
