That's the right place to get them but it's like a 70/30 chance whether or not you get a wing. Sometimes you can get one after another and other times you feel like launching the mouse at your screen hehe

That's a good question. I have had butterfly wings show up in my inventory by harvesting them but I also believe I received them in the in-game hirelin emails as well. I am not sure of any place to make a purchase of these items other than guild stores.

Harvest butterflies enough and you will find them. I have a feeling some people are leaving the insect parts in there just like they do with other alchemy nodes and worms. Oddly enough a butterfly will still fly if someone removes it's wings...

I don't know what's funnier, the idea that you can just pick up a whole lot of wingless butterflies, or that your character with such highly advanced combat skills is so clumsy they crush the wings of butterflies in their butterfingers before they can harvest them.

You get them from butterflies. The best place I have found for them is in Rivenspire just outside of the Oldgate Wayshrine camp to the left. Happy hunting. :)

Some players only harvest the wings and leave the butterfly to suffer. You come along and will only get the insect parts. I know it sounds silly but before poisons came in none of the butterflys had 'wings', only insect parts.

    I always assume the latter.
Being good at hitting DC invaders really hard with your axe does not gurantee you can pull the wings off a butterfly without crumpling them beyond any alchemical usefulness...

I started taking note of where I got them a week or two back.

By far the highest drop rate I have seen for them is Auridon, Rivenspire and Gelnumbra.

I can't recall seeing any drop at all from the EP zones.

This is an age-old problem in games. Wanting to make something rare, when it should be widely available leads to some weird occurrences.

I'm being frustrated by this in Skyrim at the moment. I need a mammoth's tusk and I've come across many mammoth skulls that quite clearly have one or two tusks but apparently I cannot take them. Even if I kill a mammoth there's only a chance it will have a tusk even though I can see two on it. (Although I kind of wish real-life worked like this. I bet poaching would be a lot less popular if it had all the same risks but only 1 in 5 elephants even had a tusk and you needed 5 at a time to make anything from them.)

Years ago I played a game that actually made this make sense. You had loads of tools to kill monsters and harvest their body parts but they all had trade-offs: if you used poison then the meat was inedible, if you used fire or did too much damage the hide would be ruined, if you weren't careful when removing them you'd break the claws and so on. The best reward came from killing something quickly, but with the absolute minimum amount of damage necessary (if it has 1000 hit points you don't want to do 1010 damage) and no special tools to help, and of course that was by far the most difficult.

In a system like that if you wanted butterfly wings you'd use a net to catch them and carefully remove the wings. It'd take longer than simply grabbing them which is what our characters seem to do, but you'd get 2 wings from every butterfly.

Of course it's probably not worth the developers time to build that level of detail into a game that's not all about hunting monsters for crafting supplies, because most people will simply rush around killing things in whatever way they can and looting whatever they get. But at times like this it would be useful.

IIRC there's a cave with outlaws/poachers just outside Whiterun with a pitfall trap at one end of it and there's a part butchered mammoth carcass in the cave, and there are 1, or 2, mammoth tusks in there on the shelves.

    Thanks. :)

I knew (from my last play through a few years ago) that there was a bandit cave somewhere around with mammoth tusks, but I hadn't gotten around to finding it. It just bothers me that in the meantime I've found numerous things that should be a source of tusks but aren't for some unknown reason. It seems especially strange in a TES game where the general rule is that if you can see an object you can take it.

It's not hireling mail, since there isn't one for alchemy. I remember they popped up in the reward bags from the New Life festival. Probably during the Witchmother's as well, though I'm less certain of that.
