Question about damage degration

Hello forum!
I'm still learning all the mechanics of this game. I had a champion 10 Fire staff i use. I'm now champion 100 and I notice that the damage is much less than it was when I got it...it's down to 870. Even if I recharge/repair it stays at that level. Do I simply need to add a new glyph to it for damage? Or is this just how the game works and at end game, I'll have to eventually get new staffs over and over?
