I have my templar tank with Hist Bark armor, Alessia sword/shield and my DK tank with Tava armor (she has battle cry passive) and Alessia mace/shield. The templar tank is much better for some reason, so she's my vet tank and the other is my normal tank.

Tavas, Dragon & Bloodspawn are great for 4 man content. You could also use 5x Tavas 5x Dragon 3x Potentates. You just lose the 5x pc Tavas on your back bar.

Oh, and if you're a Templar doing anything but Trials -- run the 70k health sunshield build and never die. Plague/Malubeth/Greenpact.

Nobody has mentioned Armor Master set yet. It's also a popular one.

if you are going with sunshiled build, i suggest you swap out Malubeth for Infernal Guardian

Traditionally, one would say that the best tank sets are ones that add to your physical and spell mitigations while boosting max health or stamina recovery. However, with so many sets out there, and so many build combinations, the answer isn't so simple.

For example, my Templar tank wears 5 piece Pariah (a set that gives you up 10k or so more mitigations based on missing health), so I can afford to wear other more group-utility sets. I was pairing Pariah with Night Mother's Gaze for a long time (since most stamina players don't use it outside of one you might find in a trial - which I don't do much of - and because of the fact that there are more stamina-based players than magicka at the moment). I also switch around different monster sets, mostly for shiggles.

My sorc tank wears 5x Tavas, 5x Widowmaker and 2x Bloodspawn, because using Shuffle allows you to dodge more, thus adding to your ultimate regeneration and allowing you to use ultimate skills much more frequently. It also means I don't have to stack much mitigation. With this build, however, I have to be more block-wary. But I am doing 20k DPS at the same time.

Because of a dragon knight's easy access to bubbles, major mending, major warding and so on, my DK tank pretty much wears whatever the hell she feels like. Sometimes I'll wear a crafted Noble's Conquest set to show off my pretty dyes and motifs and to also link in group chat at the end of a vet dungeon clear to brag about how I'm wearing a set virtually no one wears (or ever wore?) before and look at how special I am and "bb tyfg tc."

All said and done, however, outside of vROM, vCOS and vWGT, a competent tank with max CP who knows all her skills inside and out can get away with wearing pretty much anything these days.

don't laugh here...but try Orgnum's craftable set and combine it with Bee Keeper (5 pcs) plus Troll King (undaunted) and use it on any char that has a self heal...i was tooling around in a vet dungeon with this set up (solo by the way) and my health regen went up to around 8200 when these sets procced...my health was regenerating faster than i was taking dmg

combine this with regen drink/food and off you go

i run this on what is normally my stam DK, so all my attribs are in stam and my CP's are geared towards that (so i can make a quick switch to DPS)...but if i was to respec attribs and CP's i am sure my health regen could hit 10K

That works but if you're doing pledges without a healer, one malubeth proc helps a lot. I've seen my invigorating drain heal me for 27k per tic with Malu procced.

For beginners, focus on resistances and max health. In this case, I have a loadout that provides exactly that: 4pc Song of Lamae, 3pc Alessia's Bulwark, Endurance Jewellery, and any Monster set. Can replace the Monster set with one extra piece of each SoL and AB. The 5pc bonuses of the sets aren't important; they're niche at best and with this loadout you really shouldn't need them. I don't really recommend Hist Bark just because that 5pc bonus can be easily replaced by casting Shuffle, and removes the need to permablock just for that dodge chance.

If you have all your points speced into stamina and don't feel that you're tanky enough, you can use 5pc Armor Master. Most people don't recommend this set just because it's sometimes an overbuff, but you simply don't have to use the resistance buff skills with this to prevent overbuffing, and just cast Shuffle and slot some other utility skill instead. It's a great pure tanking set for newer players, but may be harder to acquire simply due to the 9-trait crafting requirement. Ask a friend to craft it for you if you want it.

For more advanced users, you'll be able to tank pretty much all vet dungeons on just 30k health and 20k resistances, so your focus has shifted to being able to generate your ultimate and spam Aggressive Warhorn. For this, go with 5pc Tava's Favor, 2pc Blood Spawn, and literally any jewellery and sword&board combination (Ebon Armory, Akaviri Dragonguard, or Endurance with Maelstrom/Masters. Really, whatever).

For vet Trials, the usual recommended build is Ebon Armory, Alkosh, and Lord Warden; this provides a lot of enemy debuffs while also buffing the group's survivability. No ulti-gen sets because that interferes with the Warhorn rotation vet Trials usually run.

Currently piecing together another ulti-gen build involving a combination of Tava's Favor, Blessing of the Potentates, and Akaviri Dragonguard. Will see how it goes.

It's not a craftable set but Ebon is pretty good too, especially when you use it with Tavas and Bloodspawn, it's what I run now and it works a treat. Warhorns for days and your group will love you long time. (Make sure you run Shuffle)

But if your looking for an alternative, I did every vet dungeon in the game including DLC's easily running 5 piece Hist Bark, 3 Endurance jewellery and 2 piece Songs of Lamae.
