How to make your own Sweet Roll ornaments

I usually make something for the holidays that I can give out to friends and family - often it's sweet treats. This year, I wanted to keep it pretty simple and Elder Scrolls themed because, fortunately, I have a lot of people to give gifts to! So, it was pretty obvious that I should do a sweet roll since it's not overly complicated and it also looks festive. (And bonus: it's still kinda like food, but good for diets!)

This was my first time working with Sculpey, but after a dozen sweet rolls, I developed a pretty efficient production line for creating them, and now I have over 100 finished. (I mean, I am a Systems Designer, after all.) Gina thought you all might enjoy this crafty tutorial that I wrote up on Facebook, and we hope you all enjoy it!

This will probably make 100s of them.


Fimo liquid gel.


Any pastels with yellows, golds, tans, golds, and a black and white stick.


I got this from amazon for maybe $8.


Get a wad of sculpey clay. Not too much because it cooks like 1/4th inch for 15 min.


Shape it.


The hole should go through it to help it cook evenly.


Texture it so it holds color and looks cakey.

Scrape pastels into powder. Be sure to use 1 brush per pastel so it doesn't cross contaminate colors.


Brush base color on it. I wanted the base to be light gold and even.


Don't forget the bottom.


Add a rich bright gold highlight to the center troughs and the ridges.


Blend with a brush that you only use for blending!


Add black pastel to the bottom where it would have touched the pan. Gently apply it as highlight. Wash hands after using black.


Highlights!

With washed hands, get fresh clay. Just a smidge.


Flatten with a brush handle.


Cut out icing to match the size of the sweetroll.


Texture the bottom of the icing and then put it on top, non texture side facing up.


Add the hole a bit but don't need to break the clay. An indent is good.


Use liquid fimo to glaze the icing then drop white pastel flakes gently. This brush should only be used for this task.


With a different fimo brush, glaze the rest of the roll. Otherwise they blend and it looks bad.

Get a hook.


Stab it in the roll at an angle.


Bake at 265* for 15 min.

I'm glad you posted this if for no other reason I now know not to try to eat the ornaments off your tree. Because I would sneak one off and pop it in my mouth if I didn't know better!

This certainly is more practical then my idea of flinging sweetrolls at my tree . Now if someone could only teach me a way to getting the Christmas lights untangles without breaking all the bulb covers .

I just found this and how awesome!!! I love working with polymer clay! I actually made some sweetrolls about a month ago! Then after making the sweetrolls I decided a guar would like to have one
