What is a large amount of spell damage for magdk?

I've been using my magDk for around a year now.. and it has definitely become my favorite character as of late. I'm running 5 sun 5 kags and 2 skoria.. all purple with all weapon damage enchants and Magicka enchants for armor. I understand in heavy armor I don't get a large amount of spell damage, but even if I switch to at least 5 light, (5 sun 3 willpower 2 skoria 2 torugs pact) I'm still not hitting 3k spell damage buffed.

I've seen posts of people hitting 5k spell damage and I'm just wondering what I can do to increase mine? Would switching to a gold staff do the trick? I know it would increase it significantly but not to 5k. I'm currently working on getting 5 BsW so I can use 5 BsW 5 sun and 2 skoria. Would that help? Thanks for any input!

I tried 5 sun 5BsW and 2 grothdarr which was alright, remember the flame damage from the sun set doesn't get added to your spell damage on the character sheet but does effect the flame damage tooltips.

yes, probably that is causing the confusion here, that some people mean spell damage as shown in the character sheet and some other people mean (total) spell damage (base shown in the char sheet + the damage of the abilities themselves)

3.3k with BSW procs, 3pc aether with damage enchant and a gold staff and molten armaments up. That's the most you'll get self buffed and it's very powerful.

Awesome.. thanks for the info guys. Yeah I understand sun doesn't show in character sheet. And I'm sure the people commenting were probably just talking about their total spell damage rather than character sheet.

Bear in mind sun doesn't get boosted by any buffs. Julianos for instance is a 300 boost with molten makes it effectively 360, and you don't have to suffer the one part health boost with sun. BSW and Juli are far better for a magdk than sun.

I'm running around in cryodiil with 2.5k spell damage and it suits me just fine, I could go more but then I lose regen.

I'm using the same setup you are except grothdaar and not skoria, all gold.
Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.

I have hit 5.2k spell power after group buffs with julianos, BSW and 1 kena.

Also spider cultist may be better than sun but you will have to test something out first. When i was helping my friend make a build we noticed that Sword dancer doesn't just increase dual wield abilities. It increased the UI weapon damage while a dual wield weapon was slotted thereby increase the damage of class skills as well. Spider cultist has more spell damage than sun so if it works the same as sword dancer it should give you more spell damage... but someone will need to test it to know for sure.

Running BSW, kags, and bloodspawn I hit about 3.7-3.8k buffed without continuous attack with 1h/shield. Would be higher with dual wield. Gold weapons make a big difference and as mentioned sun doesn't show up on your character sheet.

Wouldnt going sword and shield also make s difference? I would assume not, but haven't tried it so I guess I can't say for sure.. and there's a couple posts saying julianos is better than sun.. there were a couple posts about mag dk armor suggestions and I did not see julianos in any of them, haha! But I'll have to try it out.

If you're talking PvP you might look into making yourself a set of Clever Alchemist in heavy, it gives good survivability and bursts of extremely high damage output. I wear Skoria with 5 CA + 5 BSW (S&B & 3 jewelry with all SD enchants) + structured entropy ='s about 4700 spell damage when all buffs are up. Also making your weapon gold is a must asap, the difference in SD between purple and gold is huge.

I was thinking more in terms of PVE. I currently use kags sun and skoria for PvP. But I'll give that a shot! And i understand the concept of purple to gold but if I use sword and board will it still increase spell damage if I make them gold? Or only staves for spell damage? @itscompton

Turning any weapon gold, whether it's a sword or stave, will increase both the spell and weapon damage you get from having it equipped. But you don't get any bump in SD from making the shield gold since it's technically a piece or armor, not a weapon.
