I know some games do it occasionally, but I didn't think it was standard practice.

Hopefully they never do this.

It's so oily and people know it. If there's some game-based reward for recruiting other players, recommendations will often be treated with due skepticism.

I've seen these schemes come and generally go from other MMOs.

Yeah, it always comes off as sleazy to me, and I'm really glad they haven't done it.

Though current trends make me almost expect it sooner or later.

I thought you got Ring of Mara through Recruit a Friend. That would make sense, at least.
