Thieves Guild: Daily Heists and performing them as a group

My Girlfriend and I have for the first time started playing the Thieves Guild DLC, and we were under the assumption that performing the Thieves Guild daily Heist quests would be easier to achieve when playing together. The heist itself is not a solo instance, and allows you to bring other people in your group. While we were attempting "Heist: Underground Sepulcher" specifically, you must loot three randomly located chests, and one "Treasure Chest" before the timer runs out to achieve the highest rewards; however when one member of the group loots one of the random chests, it does not count for the other group member unless the two are standing next to each other.
This means (as I understand it) if you are to perform the heists with your friend, they would have to follow you around like a duckling throughout the entire quest; or perhaps the group split up and hopefully all members finish the heist in time, without any of them getting caught; seeing as if one person gets caught it reduces the timer for everyone in the group
Either scenario, it evidently makes the Thieves Guild Heists even more difficult when you opt to play with a friend or two.
I'm uncertain if this was an intentional design choice, or perhaps this was something that had been overlooked, seeing as i'm most likely in the minority, in regards to wanting to perform Heists with friends and not alone.
If you are truly intended to perform these heists solo, then I would perhaps suggest making the Heist instance a "Solo Instance", where group members can't enter and make it even more difficult for you to complete before the timer runs out. If on the other hand, it was the intention to have people be able to perform Thieves Guild Heists together as a group, then perhaps allow it so when one person loots a chest, it counts for the other member/s in their quest log.
I would really enjoy to hear some feedback and your own personal opinions on this subject.

It probably is a design choice, because if you could go in there as a group of 3 or 4, then you would be all but guaranteed a bonus clear just by showing up and each looting a chest. In fact, as you say, having someone else around increases your chances to get seen, so it makes the heists harder. Which is good or bad depending on how you view things.

Personally, I never worry about the timer or being seen, even going so far as to camp at the entrance until the timer runs out, then treating it like a normal delve. I got the Motif completed by Shopping at Guild Stores so no real need on my characters. But, I really really really hate timed events. I can improve any gear drops I get, so no need to worry about getting something in Purple. Even back in Oblivion with the timed event in the final Oblivion Plane, I turned on TCL and just walked to the final tower to get that quest done rather than fighting through all the other towers (did it once the real way, but never again since)

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I agree that it would be nice if this could be an actual collaborative team-work kind of thing instead of just a "lets just do this in the same area" business. I personally solo the game but this would be ideal when I partner up.

I don't like the design either.

I just don't do em anymore.....felt like it was solo only but they opened it up barely. I've personally grown disgruntled with ZOS' design for all solo only and solo-independent content like this

IIRC the DB missions are also that way. I think the reason it doesn't update the other persons mission when you do it is because it would be very simple to just have one person use a magicka nb and do the whole thing himself while everyone else stays hidden near the entrance.

I wonder if this has been broken by an update. I remember the pre-TG eso live had a segment about the heists and they specifically said that they were allowing teams in because they wanted players to have a range of strategies to complete them.

But why would that matter....it's a group....no different than two people or even three running folks through dungeons

The few times I've done these as a group it was pretty much "Stand near me and tell me if that guard comes back while I open this chest real quick"

That's all the group is good for. A lookout.

And even then people tend to screw it up.

If you don't have the NB invisible skill, don't try to follow me past that guard while I'm using it.

Other people are idiots and everything should be done solo.
