If you want to make a character for crafting, can you still use that character effectively or do you just put to many points into crafting?

There's enough skillpoints out there to where you can max out all of your Crafting and still unlock most of your class, weapon, and armor abilities/passives to be an effective fighter. You just need to do a LOT of main quests, all the public dungeon bosses, and hunt down as many Skyshards as you can find. My Templar has like 250 skills points so it's possible.

I'm around 308 skill points on my main, and it took a lot of time to get them all.

However, with that, I maxed out all professions, have a tanking build AND a DPS build. So, it is totally possible!

You also get skill points for ranking up in PvP. The first few ranks aren't too hard to get, so there's at least a few more points for you right there.

i have 3 dedicated crafting characters:

    - Blacksmith/Provisioner
    - Woodworker/Enchanter
    - Clothier/Alchemist

All 3 of them are also fully geared end game characters ...

I am a big fan of setting up a "one stop shop". Not only does this speed up total crafting time for sets (don't need to swap toons to make armor/weapons/enchants), but I also only need to acquire/buy one set of motifs!

Ye I agree with @Yinmaigao, atleast have blacksmith, clothier, woodworker on one character so you only need the motifs once, then provisioner, alchemist, enchanter on whatever other chars you like.

Totally possible, but it takes a long time and considerable effort to get all the skill points needed. One Tamriel makes this easier, because there are no more locked zones.

FYI, you can max most professions with a minimum of skill points, as long as you don't craft much. Figure out what you will be crafting, and focus skill points where you need them. Also, don't try to learn every skill and passive. After all, you can only use 10 skills and 2 ults at a time. You may not be doing VMA, but you can be effective until you get more skill points.

I have 4 mains across all 3 alliances, all 4 classes and 4 different races.
All 4 are actually master crafters in all crafts but only the dedicated crafters have 9/9 traits researched in their main craft.

    I like diversity.

There isn't a single truth. You should answer these questions:
    - Is crafting a sidetrack or major part of your game?
    - How often you think you'll craft?
    - Do you have subscription?
    - Would you like to reach completionist in crafting or just enough to make your own stuff?

If crafting frequently, you should have at least blacksmith, clothing, woodworking and enchating on one character. These four are needed to make gear. If crafting daily, relogging is very irritating, but if monthly, it doesn't matter at all. Alchemy and provisioning can be on a helper crafter because they are not needed so often - only once per week or two.

With about 300 skill points, you can have all six crafts and one fully optimized no-compromises build. If trying more than that, you need to cut some corners somewhere.

If you decide to have permanent subscription, you can rely on crafting bag and one crafter is easier. Without subscription splitting crafters helps with inventory management. A separate alchemist and provisioner can keep their stuff in their inventory.

It is way much easier to level up new fighter than a crafter. After a year the crafter(s) is getting ready. At this point many regretted they split crafting too much. If reaching achievements and completionist appeals to you, plan to consolidate all six professions eventually together to your main crafter.

I once made a crafting character. She is now a full fledged adventuring and roleplay character, and was the one of my three main characters who soloed the most stuff... so... pretty effective despite having all three gear crafting lines mostly filled, I'd say.

I have a Crafting Character: almost every motif & 8/9 traits on everything. I turned him into a Heavy Armor Sap Tank to have an easier time finding groups for pledges and trials. Now I'm looking to do Cadwell's Gold for additional skill points for PvP in Azura's Star, and wayshrine access :p

Only downside is: since he's hauling around all my crafting mats, I tend to run out of inv space during PvE :p

It's fine to do as long as you hunt for the other 200+ sky shards that are available other than just leveling

I started by making a decent combat toon & once happy I didn't need any other skills/passives I started pouring all future skill points into crafting, then once I'd maxed out crafting I went back to get the other passives.

If you want to make a character for crafting, can you still use that character effectively or do you just put to many points into crafting?

For the person who is willing to wear "found" gear you can easily do this...but not quickly. My first character was paired with my husband's first character. I put most nearly all my points into crafting, he put his mostly into tanking/dps. He tanked me all the way through the game up to level 50. By then, I was able to do the V1-16 by myself as I started to have extra points to put into dps. Now, she is one bad little girl in damage and crafting. However, if I had not had my husband to tank, it would have been nearly impossible to level her.

On the other end, he couldn't make anything for himself and all the resources for crafting went to my characters to level skills. I made all his gear and still do.

But, remember, leveling at launch was much harder than it is now. I'm sure long time players remember the unending level 38 in enchanting. Now it just goes by so quickly! you can get to 50 very fast now compared to at launch.

My husband is now leveling his crafting skills on all his characters with his extra points after making a kick-a** tank.

However, all that before, if it is your first character, everything is more difficult unless you make a good friend willing to help you. So, on PC-NA look me up and join my guild. We'll help.

Yeah, i still have nightmares about enchanting. I took a year off and when i came back on a new platform, I thought something was afoot when enchanting actually levelled at a respectable pace.

if talk with some in guild give them lots of runes, so they make stuff like cp160 blue or purple glyph you will level fast.
I have leveled two caracters to 50 enchanting just having them burn trough all the white and green glyph you get as loot.

Overall if you have one character who do all the quests and explore everything you can do it, he would typically also be your first character or at lest the first you liked. My main has maxed all crafting skills for an dps/ healer with all relevant skills including pvp and passives, also all other somewhat relevant skills like sneak on medium armor.
Yes she has all skyshards, except a one or two from imperial city sewer I think. all dungeons (normal works just as well here)
Has not gotten deep into the TG and DB skill lines even if done guests, just the first ones outside of force lock, but has 30-40 skill points free :) none research points as all is researched. 17 point I think from PvP rank.

It is possible my main, a mag sorcerer dps from the very beginning is a master crafter in all professions. As well as all passives, etc and still got about 50 skill points left over.

I do just do all the skill quests, dlc and find a bunch of shards.

I have some 275 or so points with extras to spare.
Caveat is you should reskill after finishing research just cause but with all the new dlc it’s not problem.

I’ve been doing this and only had concerns prior to Dark Brotherhood dlc but now with al the dungeons and stuff just use your main.

Do NOT roll a new character, makes sense to Necro sometimes....no out of date items in this so it’s fine i think. One would ask tho, what other thread are they trying to burry off the first page

My issue is even though I am getting close to maxing my main character as my crafter for blacksmithing, clothing and woodworking, while getting the others up there, I still have to get Alchemy and to a lesser extent Provisioning on ALL my toons due to Medicinal Use and for Provisioning I just like to have the ability to craft food on my alts.

Necro is good when there's something new to add.

One point that I didn't notice being made is that furnishing a home can require skills in multiple crafts, so as well as the motif system making it desirable to have all three equipment skills on one character, furnishing makes it desirable to have one with them all. You're likely to need clothier and provisioning together, or smithing and alchemy, to make some pieces.
