Old PC player just starting on Xbox -- Account linking?

Played for 6 months at release on PC and starting on Xbox with some friends soon. Just bought and downloaded Gold edition on Xbox and a quick question....

On login, the game asks you to create a new account or link your existing account. Can anyone tell me exactly what this does for you?

Thinking I'd like a fresh start anyway and will probably create a new account, but searches aren't yielding any answers for what actually happens if one were to link an existing account now. I'm pretty sure I remember characters not being transferred after a certain date, so I'd just like to know specifically the deal with this before I proceed.

The account connection is just a login. No crowns, characters, subscriptions, dlcs, crown store items or anything else carries over. IIRC the game even displays your gamertag/psn not your @account name

NA or EU? I'm kind of a jackass but typically a good guy. I run with a smaller guild on xbox NA. There aren't many of us left, but we do what we can.

NA. Buying the game for a friend for xmas and have another friend and his son playing after they get their console (consoles?) for xmas, also. Might have one other joining us but not sure about that one yet.
