What's the best way to work out the value if kit for selling? It's fairly straight forward if you can find a similar piece for sale with a guild vendor but it's not always available. I was wondering whether there are any website amongst the multitude of TESO sites that might give guide prices for dropped sets and rare pieces.

For PC there is a buch of Add-ons like Master Merchant that datamines guild vendors information and give a average of price of whats being selling.

From what I know there's no centralized database for prices, and prices may vary a lot from guild to guild. MM only considers the prices derived from the transactions on your guilds, but doesn't know anything about the prices on other guilds. You can simply ask for MM price estimates from other people, as they may have another guild combo and thus cover a higher number of guilds, in the end mediating the estimates. Sometimes even the MM prices are really off, either due to a general shift in prices, or outlier transaction, where a certain item sells for unusually high price, probably due to a scam or poorly masked gold selling.

Thanks, I'll have a look around some the the guild vendors for an idea. I've not traded too much so I've very little idea what's hot at the moment.

Everything sells. If you have fast sales you can make lots of money even selling cheap stuff. Try setting prices about 5-10% lower than MM suggests. I even put common runes and style materials in stacks of 50, 100 or even 200 and they sell pretty fast. Materials have cheapened a lot since they are available everywhere since One Tamriel. For example rubedite has dropped from 70 to about 20. If it drops under 15 it will no longer be profitable to sell on guild stores, as the profit from using it for writs is higher.
