I love the normal sounds of a game, with the extremely rare exception for when I'm grinding something repetitively, which happens so rarely in ESO. Then I put on some podcasts.

I love the music, but sometimes I just want to hear the environmental sounds better. I was just curious what others do.

It varies. Sometimes the music is fantastic and I hate playing without it (looking at you Orsinium). Other times audio cues are a pretty critical part of gameplay (i.e. vMA).

Playing with it off would be like watching jaws or star wars on mute. The sound tracks without question makes TES games what they are. They are a huge part of it.

While I love the TES Sound Tracks and own most of them on CD, I don't like to hear the music while I am playing the game. It drowns out the other sounds that I like and want to hear, plus the dialogs. Also, I don't like the combat music telling me I am in combat, although this game has other cues for that.

Most of the issue comes from if I turn the music up enough to appreciate it, that is when it drowns out other audio. When I lower it down enough to be able to hear the other audio cues, it becomes an annoying background buzzing that still interferes with what I want to hear. I don't know how movie people who do the audio can balance music and dialog and sound effects so well, probably adjust levels every frame or sequence.

I also got into the habit of turning off music back in the 8 bit days. You think nails on a chalkboard (if anyone remembers those) is annoying, just listen to Super Mario Brothers for 6 or 8 hours while playing that game. And, the Final Fantasy 8 bit was not much better, and don't get me started on the original Zelda games music.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I would 100% keep the music on, if there was a way to turn the battle music off. When you're constantly fending off mobs wherever you step, it gets really annoying to have the battle music interrupt the ambiance every ten seconds.

So I just turn the music off and launch Pandora instead.

Sound fx on always, but game music usually off while I stream Pandora. I really like the ESO score, but it's been almost 3 years now, I just don't want to listen to it every night anymore.

I love the music but sometimes I prefer my own because at times it gets me in the zone to play (no pun intended)

When I used to PVP in the IC sewers though I'd have all sound off except for footsteps so I could hear the banner boss coming. Kind of liked the silent ballet with footsteps hitting grates and such :) more relaxing

One thing that Elder Scrolls games do right is the music, it's always top notch, I'll have it on unless I've either got my music going or I'm doing something with a group that requires me to actually listen and coordinate.

depends the music in this game is pretty bland and uninteresting I wish I could go into the sound files and replace the combat music with something more amped or have the normal idle music more soothing and elegant

More music selections are needed in the mix but I can't play it without the in game music even though it repeats. Most games I am like that even if the music is not great. I can't listen to a CD or something because it seems out of place.

I keep it off when I'm exploring because I find it more immersive to hear just the voices and the ambiance sounds.

But I turn it on for epic boss fights. I especially like the music on the Minotaur Boss fight in the Gold Coast.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

Some of the music is fantastic, some is very "meh". I'd love an addon that allows us to assign certain tracks for certain situations. For example:

    Battle music 1
    Battle music 2
    Travel music 1
    Travel music 2
    Delve music 1

    and so on...

The normal game sound, because it's pretty atmospherical and well made and it just suits to Tamriel.

Two Steps from Hell is definitely my most favored music I abuse as a personal sound track for gaming backgrounds or just daydreaming while I go home by train from work. There is some other stuff I hear occasionally like true classical music or some other movie sound tracks (LotR sound tracks are pretty nice for example).
