Vet maelstrom on magick dragonknight

Been at it for a year and still cant beat vet maelstrom what gear should i be using, skills, champion point setup and does my gear need to be all gold?

My favorite class to do vMA.

The most survivable setup is this:

Destro
1. Wall of elements - best magicka dps skill in game
2. Draw essence - AoE, interrupts, heals you: perfect for this content
3. burning embers - best DoT in game, heals you. if you spam this, you dont die
4. crushing shock - you need range
5. reflective scales - makes you immune to range

Resto
1. mutagen - useful HoT
2. Healing ward - way better than dragon blood.
3. eruption - place this under bosses
4. fossilize / inferno - fossilize is good for evening odds (do not damage that target), inferno is decent dps
5. molten armaments - spellpower buff

You get the power buffs every single round. use them intelligently. you wont die will defensive rune.

For gear, you dont need gold. if you have burning spellweave use that, otherwise julianos is fine. use a monster set (valkyn or Grothdar are good). I would recommend 2 regeneration glyphs on your jewlery until you get the hang of VMA and dont have to heal yourself so much.

I use a heavy attack build on my mag dk: 5 aether 5 burning spellweave and a vMA lightning staff on main bar and a vMA resto on back bar. Use harness magicka, put rapid regen on back bar. The trick is to put down blockade and eruption under an enemy, keep molten armaments, rapid regen and harness magicka up and heavy attack your way through. Crazy aoe damage and single target damage! A single tick of the lightning staff hits for 14k damage.

If you don't have this setup, use 5 pieces of julianos with staffs and a piece of molag kena for the additional spell damage or a 1 piece for max magicka.
