New Guild Members, Who Don't Speak English

Ok, I am taking a risk here because this could easily devolve into some kind of rant/hate thing. Understand, this is just an observation I made which had me stop and think. I honestly don't know what this means, and it could very well mean nothing.

I am in three of the larger trading guilds on the NA server. This week, several people wanted to get invites for their friends who were new to the game and didn't speak English very well. This is several instances in separate guilds with different players, non of whom I know.

Now, I understand One Tamriel is making ESO more popular than it was, and there is a flood of new and returning players. The answer might be as simple as that. However, I also hear people complaining of "bots" running in Craglorn and now Wrothgar, and I couldn't help but wonder if there is somehow a connection.

I apologize in advance if this is insulting new and existing players who do not have English as their first language and wish to play the game. I am not suggesting that people who do not speak English very well are causing a problem. Rather, I am curious as to whether "My friend does not speak English" is being used as a cover for some other practice. If it were not so many instances over the space of just this week, I would not have thought anything of it.

It appears the OP is referring to people who do not have English as /any/ language. As in, no English at all.

Well, there's plenty of native English speakers on this forum that make English not even seem like a language at all.

I do the opposite - I befriend low-level Japanese players (black cat/red collar) and group with them, craft them nice purple Set armor, give them 10000 gold, and then run around in dungeons with them. I then use Google Translate to poorly translate surreal statements like,

"Nevertheless, the whirling, fetid linguini of harkens back unto cobra zed."

And then paste the Japanese characters into Group chat.

I honestly cannot even remotely imagine what these new players make of these experiences. I hope they cherish them forever.

On a serious note, ....are you sleepy?

I would caution you to never in a million quests to try and draw such things.
I would suggest that you meet the potential person before inviting them. Perhaps play with them in a group or have a bottom guild tier that's just to check ppl out

English is just the third most spoken language according to Google. As a Chinese I can't speak English very well but I don't even care.
It's surely a very good excuse for a bot account since they won't bother to talk in guild channel, but only several cases can be just a coincidence.
If you've got some spare time, try asking their "friends" for their nationality. It may be fun for a guild chat if they really use lies to cover lies.

So you suspect that they might be using bots and trying to "clean" the goods through your guild's store?
Well, first of all, many people join trading guilds to sell stuff, not to socialize. There's only 2 ways to sell stuff to other players: guild stores and chat, and for someone who doesnt speak Engish, chat isnt really an option. English isnt the first language for many people in this game (mostly on EU server of course). I wouldnt say there's something unusual about that.
Secondly, you can check what they're selling. Obviously a non-vet/cp20 account that isnt leveling but is selling stacks of golden mats every day looks fishy. ;)
But I dont think there's a connection between botting and foreign languages. There are hacker's forums and sites that sell hacks and bots of all kinds, and their owners speak English. :)

Edit: typos, English isnt my first language as well... :D

It was a bit short-sighted for ZOS to create a Japanese edition, then not even patch a single-word translator into the chat interface so we could communicate with them in their native language.

Then again, like everything She does, I'd imagine the Japanese edition was just an attempt to get completionists to buy yet another copy of the game for a single pet. It's just coincidental that some people in Japan actually purchased it.

Seriously. I'm a native English speaker and most people who say that speak better English than I do. I blame typo's though!

Dont speak english at -all-? Kick 'em.

That's not even being dickish, they dont know how to communicate with most if not all of the guild, potential language barriers would be too much to deal with.

You should come join the EU server, we have all sorts of languages here - and somehow, people still manage to communicate and play together. Admittedly, zone chat sometimes gets a bit confusing. But many of us speak more than one or two languages anyway, which helps.

I do not see the connection between non-native English speakers (or non-English speakers) and bots...

There's an entire continent south of you with 500 mln people who don't speak English as their first language - and another 100 mln across the ocean where ESO launched just a few months ago. They aren't necessarily all bots and gold-sellers, you know?

I get to practice my French, Spanish, Italian and German, I think it would be a shame to have separate servers.

If you really have a problem understanding each other, try to find a different group, or group with known English-Speakers in your guild.

But seriously, there are only three region servers, and people can choose which one to sign up to and there are more people in the world who don't speak English than who do, so you might come across some occasionally.

English is my native tongue, but good luck to anyone that has the misfortune of chatting to me in-game. I have a heavy Scottish accent and even some Scots have trouble understanding me as I do with fellow Scots. The UK is very unique in that regard. You can travel 10mins down the road and enter an area where the local dialect is completely foreign to the place you've just travelled from.

    Haha

This has to be a joke.

I'm Engilsh, I was born in England and believe me most people don't speak English.

Anyway why would bots be in anyway connected to people who don't speak English!! Nealy all programming languages are in English, as is the eso API, so it's likely that you'd need a command of English to program a bot. If you are looking for bot programmers then start with English speakers because that's where you are likely to find them.

I've seen a number of those pop up, spamming the text chat, I just report the player and then block them so I don't see their spam anymore.

Sorry, I block gold sellers, not guild spammers - I just ignore those.
