Normal MSA, how is loot handled?

I just recently returned to the game and the Orsinium event is giving me a reason to visit MSA for the first time ever. I am after one of the sets in there for a build. I suck at that kind of solo challenges and am a filthy casual, so no vMSA for me anyway.

Now, I did up to and including stage 8 twice and the first 4-5 stages around 6-7 times and I haven't seen a single chest piece drop. I have tons of other gear pieces, but no chest. So my question is, is loot bound to specific stages? Like jewellery, that only appears in rather late stages. How do I get my chest piece then? RNG isn't kind anyway, I get tons of wrong set pieces, but not the correct ones
