WARNING New Players Do Not Buy Petty Gems

Hi I just got suckered so to other new players sending out this warning. Guildies will sell you petty gems and they are worthless. We're not in Skyrim anymore kids.

Anytime i start a new MMO i follow a rule of thumb. I don't buy anything. Leveling is typically easy and purchases are unnecessary anyway. So i'll save my currency, level up and make purchases once i have the market a little figured out.

No, since the One Tamriel update only grand soul gems work to revive anyone.

To put it bluntly, no disrespect to your guild, but sounds like there are unscrupulous players within the ranks. Least thing you can do is sell the gems to a NPC vendor.

They REALLY should replace all size soul gems in the game with a generic "Soul Gem" that's equivalent of the grand soul gems we now have to use for -everything-

I mean, really... all those different levels of soul gems are a thing of the past now that we're in one tamriel, yes? So why keep 'em?

There are NPC vendors that sell empty soul gems. They used to sell ones of appropriate level to the zones that they were in (although I'm not actually sure if there were any that sold petty ones). You buy up the empty ones, fill them, wait for them to convert to grand soul gems, and then sell them back to vendors at a profit. I don't know exactly what empty petty soul gems would have cost, but I'm pretty sure it was less than the 30 gold that you can sell a full grand soul gem to a vendor for, so that's how you would make money off it if they had converted all soul gems to grand.

When you pick them up in the wild they now auto-convert to Grand Soul gems.

From memory tyhe cheapest empty soul gem was 9 gold. i believe Grand empty gems were 121, now grand are 50 gold... considering they reduced the cost of grand soul gems by over half and effectively screwing over anyone who bought empty grand soul gems just before the release of one tamriel i really see it as a non-issue to convert all gems to grand.

I from time to time buy empty gems and then charge em up and sell, and always undercut while also checking vendors often enough, they barely move. so i doubt ZOS were really worried about someone becoming an instant billionaire buying empty petty soul gems.

I see it more as a case of the loading screen tool tip "the level of a group dungeon is always based off the level of the group leader" still being there after one tamriel and that ZOS forgot to even consider it.

OK, so if the cheapest empty soul gem prior to the change was 9 gold, consider this example. I'm usually sitting on around 750K to 1 million gold (and I know there are a lot of people who have way more gold than me). If I were to spend 750K on empty 9 gold soul gems, fill them, and vendor them when they've converted to grand soul gems, then I would have just turned that 750K into 2.5 million gold.

If a bunch of people who actually have a lot of gold (ie. people with significantly more gold than me) did that, it would mean many millions getting pumped into the economy out of nowhere. Would it cause as much damage as the duplication exploit way back? Nope, but it would still cause a significant shift in the economy and guild store prices.

I did as well, well i bought "greater soul gems". I just typed in soul gems and bought the cheapest set because i have only been playing two weeks and didn't even realise there were more than one type of soul gem at some point.

Why is it even possible to list and sell these useless gems anyway? why haven't they been prevented from selling them?

Please Zenimax can you give me back my gold pls... it isn't really that much gold I just think this punishes new players terribly.

okay sure it would break the economy if petty gems were suddenly grand, doesn't explain why they can still be sold in guild markets... or sold/traded to anyone other than the in game stores.

Some people stack on them in a form of memento, in a year or two itll be fun to show off Petty soul gem in chat. Outside of this i agree that selling them ad a scam is sad, but at the same time qhat keeps you from buying a generic lvl 30 blue gear for way more than what its worth because as a new player you thought it would be good on your toon.

Or it was absolutely over looked just like how as a Crafter youre going to have a hard time finding mats for appropriate levels below your level and where your skill points are.

When you pick up old gems from the overworld, even if it says petty or anything else, upon pickup it transforms into grand, so you can't actually pick anything else except grand anymore. The only time you would have anything else is if you had some old ones in your bags, which you can still use to recharge enchantment.

Aha. This explains (sort of) why I could not charge the staff of a low level alt, and why the mystic I went to only had grand soul gems which really confused & annoyed me at the time.

But does that now mean those filled whatever gems from before 1T are useless? It does not seem that they can even be used up in partial charging.....

Yup, they became vendor trash with the update (I seem to remember that the price vendors will buy them for increased, but I could be making that up). Can't be used for anything else. Well, other than scamming newbies, but there's a special level of hell for people who do that. The level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theatre.

It's not really scamming if Zeni have an oversight and failed to convert them to prevent from being sold.
