Siege shield in PvE content?

I've noticed that some healers deploy siege shield in PvE content, especially in trials. The description of the skills states that only reduces damage from siege engines (ex. flame ballista). Does it also protect from boss AoE and various other mechanics, or has done so at an earlier point?

There is a morph of siege shield that increases the max distance of skills when you are in it, this is why it is used in trials.

Nope, I'm positively sure it's siege shield, because the animation, though similar, has different edges. And it was a Templar, not a sorcerer who used it. Siege shield has a red central pillar and more ragged bubble edges, while negate magic has a blue central pillar and smooth bubble edges.

I actually saw the tool tip, but assumed that range buff was effective just in PvP.

Propelling Shield

Create a protective sphere over your location that reduces damage from siege weapons by 35% for 20 seconds.
Also increases the rang of abilities with a range greater than 20 meters by 4 meters.
Costs less and allies in the shield gain increased range.
