It doesn't exactly hurt to try, there's no mandatory subscription anymore. It's entirely up to you, and depends on the reasons you left in the first place.
Personally, I'm starting to see a small, but significant, shift in ZOS' attitude towards the game, for the better. I'll keep my judgement reserved for after update 13, when 14 is announced.
I kinda walked away when craglorn came out then came back for a little bit when thieves guild came out. Left again when dark brotherhood came out. Have not played since.
I just kinda got bored. Everyone in my guild quit and professions served no purpose.
This is were my signature would be if I was allowed one.
Did you find anything about the game enjoyable? i.e. What was your niche activity? With the launch of 1T I think the game has had a breath of fresh air introduced into it.
There are plenty of active guilds recruiting at all hours of the day. Lots of people everywhere. Now is a good time to jump back in and see if it gets your attention again.
Don't concern yourself with whether other people say you should return or not, just give it a try. Only you can decide if you like the game as it is now.
Things that I've found I've liked so far with One Tamriel:
1. The whole "world" is relevant again - everything is "on level" and works with whatever you are trying to do
2. The various daily quests send you all over, so you have reasons to visit "everywhere". And there are a lot of them.
3. Craglorn is lots of fun - even as solo!
4. All zones are much more active now
5. Dueling? Yeah, I dueled my son and I though't I'd wipe him and we ended up in a 1/1 draw after two best-of-three matches!
