Passive Mode: PvE with optional PvP, everywhere.

If you've played GTA:Online, you might be familiar with the term 'passive mode'. It's basically their option for shutting off PvP in freemode, so players can choose not to be disturbed. Now, in GTA, passive mode shuts off the ability to use combat completely, however, the concept of being able to shut off PvP is what I am mainly focused on. There are many things that a passive toggle could do which would make everyone happy, but let me try to start with the basics, and then clear up a little confusion on what else would happen.

Passive Mode Toggle On: While A player is toggled in passive mode, they are completely hallow, able to run through other players, and only able to attack NPC's. Basically, what we all have right now in PvE. Every time you log out, your account automatically toggles passive mode on. Guards in the game are invincible while in passive mode.

Passive Mode Toggle Off for Alliance: In toggle off for alliance mode, all players would turn PvP on against players of other alliances, no matter where they go in Tamriel. Players enemy health bars would turn red if they were also out of passive mode, and it would be a free for all for any who chose this option. Guards in PvE zones would still be invincible, however players not in passive mode would no longer be hallow, so if you ran into them you would be forced to stop instead of running through them.

Passive Mode Toggle Off: In the toggle off mode, your damage would hit any other player who has their passive mode completely off, for a complete free for all of PvP. With this option, guards will no longer be invincible, however neither will you. All players with passive mode completely off will be able to kill you, so they can fight along side the guards if they chose to not attack innocents.

Passive Mode Toggle Off excluding friends: This option would be the same as above, however it would prevent your damage from hitting anyone on your friend list.

How would you prevent abuse of passive mode? The answer is simple. If someone toggles passive mode off, there is a timer in place before they can toggle it back on. This timer can be from 60 seconds to 5 minutes.

What would a passive option accomplish? For starters, it would bring PvP to the entire game and PvE to Cyrodil. It would also allow a PvP justice system for all who wish to play free for all.

What about fighting inside cities? The game has too much lag already. Well, one way to work around this is the automatically enable passive mode in any area that you can not mount a horse. This would prevent PvP scenarios mostly indoors and at craft locations. However, beyond that, they really should just improve performance rather than dance around the memory leak.

Wouldn't this make dueling pointless? No. There would still be the option to duel, which basically turns PvP on for the two who wish to settle their differences.

I personally believe this would be the absolute best thing that could be done to this game, and while it is highly unlikely to ever happen, just thought I'd share the idea during this downtime.

    Yes, just make it an alliance war auto duel accept with no restriction on who can join other than by alliance.

    I am fine with having PvP anywhere as long as you can flag for it and opt out. It should not be allowed in highly populated cities.

    Might as well just create a PVP and RP megaserver if they're going to consider anything, so we can nip a whole lot of Day1-criticisms in the bud. TBH

    A PVP server wouldn't need a toggle, you should know what you're getting yourself into when you roll a character into that environment. RP would speak for itself, providing a server for likeminded players to actually meet and interact without this phasing nonsense.

    and has everything to do with Players versus Players, putting their presence anywhere in a fantasy lore PVE setting

    If you're familiar with GTA Online's passive mode you'd know that it's used primarily as a tool for griefing. Gotta love it when a passive mode guy parks his car in front of a store and let's his buddy RPG you.

    First of all: am i blind or you just proposed "open world PvP" option, like not aliance VS aliance (like Cyrodil is now), but even inside your own alliance

    So you not really want to turn all PvE map into "Cyrodil", you want to turn all maps into Open PvP "free for all" style

    i have even better option for you: completly new server with your rules "PvP server" -with one way transfer for all wiling, and NO WAY BACK - you would need to transfer l your entire account, and if you wish to go back then you would be forced to start from ZERO.

    From my personal experience i know some facts that apply to ALL MMOs:
    1) pvp servers ALWAYS dies first
    2)there is a selection of open pvp MMOs, and they have one thing in common: pve section of game is either non existant or laughable excuse.
    3)^ yet, there is no such a thing like succesfull "Open PvP" AAA MMO game (for example look at big failure that ArcheAge turned into, mostly thanks to inside faction ganking :/ )


    ESo is NOT OPEN PVP GAME - it is HEAVY focused on PvE, so stop trying to turn it into PVP-land

    I actually don't think that's a terrible idea. Plenty of past MMOs had open world PVP while catering to a faction-based system. The two are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Cyrodiil should deny you the ability to betray your own faction but as for open world, I'm actually okay with it FFA (Free For All). But again, this would come down to the fact that if it were within its own server, I'd know what I was getting myself into - otherwise if I didn't want to be there, I would cancel out of making a character on said megaserver.


    The thing I find funny about the suggestion is that the OP is asking for a toggle where players have the CHOICE. I've been through enough MMOs that the majority will choose to leave that toggle disabled. Then we'll have the tryhards crying that the game should be forcing people to "flag" up. Already since coming back, I've been challenged to a duel and when I declined - they'd throw a fit.

    So I think just having a server for PVPers to go to where there's open PVP, would defeat the whole purpose of having a toggle in the first place.

    Many of the "I wanna pvp all the time everywhere against everyone" players really DO NOT WANT a pvp only server. Only other players with the same mindset would be there, and there wouldn't be many easy kills they could brag/trash talk/tbag.

    When people have suggested a separate instance for pve only Cyrodiil, the pvpers, who would actually benefit if the devs did this, start ranting immediately about how it would ruin life in this sector of the galaxy forever. The pve players who go to Cyrodiil in groups to run skyshards and books actively avoid pvp. They are not contributing to the war. At best, they provide easy targets to the pvp built/geared players. Every pver in Cyrodiil is one less pvp player that can be there. My suspicion is that many of the pvpers are afraid that if a separate pve instance of Cyrodiil was created, the pvpers who really don't want to do pvp would immediately switch over, and there would be no more easy kills/ganking with the pvp only area deserted.

    I would be all for a separate pvp only server. All the duels could be moved there as well; portal to Thunderdome; loser respawns in normal Tamriel, winner can hang out and fight more until they lose. Then the hardcore can go back and do it all over again.

    It doesn't need to be extended to other areas but with One Tamriel its an interesting idea. Before the factions were separated from each other aside from cyrodiil. There really wasn't a point to open world pvp. Now we are all together and there is a war going on.

    Keep PVP in Cyrodiil (that includes duels), leave the PvE players to play the game in peace.

    Call me a "carebear" or some other derogatory term for a person who only enjoys PvE, I don't care.

    But I moved to this MMO specifically for two reasons.

    1) It's an MMO with an Elder Scrolls skin on it.
    2) They separated PvE from PvP.

    As someone else mentioned, plenty of other MMO's do full open World PvP. And you know what? I don't play those MMO's. I despise PvP, and only go into Cyrodiil if I need something specific (like farming for Dragon Scute). But even then, I do everything in my power to avoid actual PvP and the Alliance War.

    Keep them separated. I cannot argue against this idea enough.

    I asume you created the poll to show most players do not want PvP everywhere since that would be the obvious results based on previous polls on similar topics.

    It's also the reason the "justice system" does not include PvP.

    Additionally, Zos will not be creating separate servers for PvP as theirs are not enough players to justify splitting the 2 PC serves into 4. Actually, the 6 servers onto 12. And most players into PvP would not transfer anyhow since they have friends here that would not move.

    I would love to have any option that let me go to cyrodil and just FISH! I don't pvp and having all the ocean spots in another alliance makes fishing nerve wracking

    And we're already going to have to deal with the massice lag spikes from dueling being allowed in the cities as it is.

    We don't need any more reasons for the game to crash out on the PvE side.

    Just no. You called out turning it off for areas where you can't mount a horse mentioning crafting areas particularly as a way to avoid lag. Have you any idea just how many crafting areas are regularly crowded with jerks on horses because they are open? Too many. That's not the point anyway. Unless it is a separate instance it would just be a mess in every way. Keep PvP where it is. I plan to download One Tamriel when it is available on the Xbox but then will take a vacation until everyone gets the dueling thing out of their system. I'm so looking forward to Skyrim again for some peaceful unexpected saber cat attacks.

    I don't kill people that are fishing, it just seems rude lol.

    I fished right near Alessia bridge while a huge battle was going on there without incident. I could hear meteors and all kinds of attacks but they were to busy to bother with me.

    I don't know....ESO is a PvE game. I think duels are enough , but they could add some more modes (like 2 vs 2/ group vs group) & of course battlegrounds. But keep open world PvP out of the PvE zones. Saying this as a PvP player.

    There are other games for open world PvP like BDO or B&S.

    No - with whatever respect i can muster, this has been raised repeatedly since launch and in general rejected my a decent margin of votes on these forums. That result tends to be supported by the relative sizes of the PvE and PvP populations.

    I play PvP and I like it it in Cyrodiil where it belongs - duels are an annoyance that I will adjust to in time but no game should be designed around forcing players to opt out of things only a minority want. There are a lot of fantasy games with open world PvP - go enjoy them for that and enjoy this game for what it is too.

    I dont play those games because I dont need PVP servers. If that's what you want, this game isn't for you.

    While I am in favor of it in Cyro so we can finally do the damn quests, this can be fixed with a neutral campaign, something I doubt is in the cards. So that point, is moot.

    That was the most fun I had fishing. A guildie and I went to Cyrodiil on our EP characters on a map that was pretty much full Blue. At that time there were still the old forward camps, so we set one up in the most hidden spot we could just in case and then managed to swim over to Bravil without being eaten by the slaughterfish. There are 2-3 spots on that side as well and nobody can see you. We only left when we had all our ocean fish.

    I still need 1 fish from IC. I need to get that soon.

    cyrodil is fine the way it is. you doing pve in cyrodil is your choice and you must accept if you get killed by an enemy raid

    Lol I play GTA online all the time, people abuse the hell out of passive mode. Follow you in a jet and wait til you're not paying attention, come out of passive, bomb the crap out of you, go back into passive. This is a bad idea for ESO honestly.
