How Do You Allocate Skill Points Effectively?

Hello there. I've not really gotten very far in this game with any of my characters, having had very little time or the patience to really invest in the game.
However, currently I have purchased the game for PS4 in anticipation of the upcoming One Tamriel and have been reinvigorated to experience the game from the console this time.

I'm not a newb at MMO's. I've played everything from Dungeons and Dragons Online to World of Warcraft. I know how to plan characters pretty well, but I'm feeling a little stumped on ESO currently with how the skills work. I was hoping for just a little advice that I can take into account as I level up my characters.

Currently, my main is a Dragonknight Dark Elf in the Ebonheart Pact. I've leveled the three paths equally so far, leaning toward the Draconic Power skills. I'm just about to hit level 10.
I've also decided that I will attempt to become a master smith with her. Just reached Blacksmithing level 5 last night after completing my first writ, and have a few traits learned for odd weapons and armors. I'm very torn however, when allocating points between my combat skills and crafting skills. I've had no problem with enemies up until just a couple quests ago where groups of 3 would start to widdle my health dangerously low if I wasn't very careful, so I felt like I might be beginning to lack in combat power. Yet, I don't want to miss opportunities to advance my smithing skills and make better armor and weapons. I've also been messing with Enchanting and it's a decent level. (It seems to get XP a lot faster then the other crafting skills.)

So how would you all, as the community, allocate these different skill points? What takes priority as a character levels and moves on through the world? Is there specific things I should be working toward? Are my combat abilities just going to lack in general because of my goal of being a major crafter, also out of mana, stamina and health what should take priority and by how much? Please leave your thoughts and opinions. ^^

First off, level and research clothing and woodworking as well, regardless of whether or not you plan to craft with them. You will regret it later if you don't.

There really are a whole lot of skill points in this game, so you don't really have to worry about lacking them. No, being a crafter isn't going to make you weaker. My main has 50 in all 6 crafting skills and I've yet to run out of skill points. If you're going to be

For stat allocations, pick whether you want your character to be magicka or stamina. If you want it to be a magicka character, put all points into magicka, and if you want to be a stamina character, put all points into stamina. It's quite simple really. That's the optimum setup for a whole lot of builds.

With T1 if you ever find yourself in need of skill points.... just go off to some other zone and get all the skyshards there. If you want to keep your crafting skills in line with your leveling pace then you will definitely always feel like you're at a deficit.

Spending skill points you're ideally going to want the different skills that become available as you go down the trees, then the passives from your race, armor, weapon, etc.

There's no real right way of doing this. Read the things, invest in what you think is useful, and always try to level every ability you get to at least be able to morph. Reason being some morphs of abilities make them amazing and/or change the resource they use (ie magicka to stamina).

It's good to know that I won't have to worry about how many points I'm getting. And I think I've decided to lean heavy on the magicka while leveling up. I've expanded into all the other crafts besides alchemy and provisioning since I've been finding it very not to my liking but maybe I'll change my tune down the road. Thank you both for the helpful comments.

Here's a nice write-up about how to level your DK:

It also talks about what to skill-up and how to skill-up.

That there was very helpful. I kinda had it in my head that I could benefit from the passives of other skills/weapons and armor even if I wasn't using a ton of it, but this more or less confirms it for me. I've probably messed up my build a little, but she's only level 12, and while it'll be a small pain, I can amend my mistakes with a day or two of grinding the area's I'm lacking. Thank you very much.

My advice would be the following, research and deconstruct everything you find including quest rewards. If you know the trait deconstruct it. You will get more exp by doing that than simply crafting, do this and by the time you're lvl 50 your crafting skill with be too or at least close to max. Never sell the gear!

Also writs do help out alot, never miss them. As for skill points, first concentrate on combat. Once you have your build set use the remaining skill points on your crafting skill. Be sure to collect skyshards, you get a skill point for every 3 you collect. There are skyshards overworld and in each delve, never miss a delve. Each group dungeon's main story quest also award skill points.

If you don't have a group get one, laslty I'm on PS4 too, NA If you need any help you can reach me out, Fallen_Ray- is my user I'm with the Ebonhart pact too. Do each region's main quest, those award skill points too as does the main story quest.

For the time being level up your crafting purely on deconstruction. Don't worry about crafting your gear for a while yet. Also, there is a skill respect area in Mournhold (Deshaan) which you will find soon enough. Other than your class there is nothing you can't change eventually with gold (skills) or $$$ (race).

So how would you all, as the community, allocate these different skill points?

Being that you can collect pretty much all the skyshards in the base zones just out of the Wailing Prison now, the following does need to be adjusted for that. This guide is based on the pre One Tamriel Game where the skyshards were split up among alliances.

    Character Levels:

1 to 10 Weapon Skills and Class Skills (have one class skill on your bar at all times to level those as the classes level the slowest)
10 to 15 Main Weapon Skills, support skills
15to 25 Second Weapon skills, and Passives (Armor and Race being the preferred here)
25 to 35 Passives and new combat/class skills you unlock, if you have any left for support skills use them here
35 to 50 You should be at a point where you have more skills than places to use them, this might be a good time to invest in crafting

You should try to get all your weapon skills and class skills to at least the Morph stage, even if you don't take the morph. Always unlock any new Main Weapon or Class skills as soon as they become available. Second Weapon and Armor Passives are the next priority.

This is a rough guide, and you can pick up more skills now from skyshards early on than you could before. Plus, under the new system, every few levels, you get more than one skill point to make up for the 14 you miss not getting Vet Ranks. So, this is just a general idea of how to prioritize.
