Open GL, Linux

The game runs on Windows DX, and Mac Open Gl, but yet trying to get anywhere with Open GL in Linux... If I could I would just get rid of windows completely. Especially the crap with forcing you to download Windows 10 with annoying pop ups. I have tried PlayOnLinux as it is called, but it seems like the CPU is sucked into a black hole when the launcher is downloading. Everything freezes up, but yet the CPU light is going nuts. If I could, I would completely get rid of microsoft...

They used to support OpenGL on the PC as well but that was removed some time ago.

It's a shame really, since porting it to Linux and OpenGL would have been trivial.

The game removed support for Open GL, and Direct X 9 with the thieves guild update. They never gave a reason for this aside from, there were spell effects they couldn't render with these, and I doubt people asked for them.

I would like to see the support for these brought back, optimization took a nosedive when they forced the game to run on a system it wasn't ever designed for.

Since Wine supports DX11, ESO works again on Linux, ofc with some workarounds. You should take a look for it.

The game would probably be unplayable without top end graphics card and cpu on DX9. Looking up here:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ff476876(v=vs.85).aspx

DirectX9 does not support multiple render targets (deferred rendering) or geometry shaders, which are critical for performance of lighting and particle rendering. Also DX9 is a 10+ year old API, they shouldn't even have supported it at all.

I have recently tried PlayOnLinux, but the launcher is like a black hole. CPU is very active, but within the launcher, it is like trying to download a huge file on dial up... The CPU light is always flashing. But yet the system locks up. Very annoying... I would love to ditch Windows completely...

I did get ESO to go beyond the launcher. However there was horrible artifacting, and was very unstable. Sucks that I have a card that supports it. Guess I'll just have to be a slave yet to windows lol

That's very old article, its not experimental anymore
Many useful info is writen here at WineHQ (generally its your main source of info about ways to run any game through wine)
https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=34086. Check PoL forum too: https://www.playonlinux.com/en/app-1990-The_Elder_Scrolls_Online.html and this reddit thread for more info https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/50e4aa/elder_scrolls_online_finally_works_with_wineagain/

It can be easier to configure wine prefix and wine environment by PlayOnLinux. Its just your preference. Don't look at posts like "this game dont work", anyone who wrote this, probably made not enough effort to make it work.

Well, try to run this game by eso.exe or eso64.exe. In this case you should try to modify lines in UserSettings.txt. I think Wine is running any game only on 1 core. You need to adjust that in this file. There is also wine branch with CSMT enabled, try that one too, it was buggy in some games, i havent tried it since a 8 months.

    Re. The DX9 Point:

To be fair to ZOS, DirectX9 dropped off the vendor support roadmap a while back, which puts a developer in a tricky position re. supporting it themselves. Because if they have issues, they can't raise a ticket with the vendor, in this case Microsoft, so we can't really expect them to support a legacy technology that the vendor themselves no longer support.

What distro are you trying to run ESO on? Previously had ESO running on Debian with very few issues. The only problem I ran into was that doors were not usable in Cyrodiil.

WINE is not an emulator...no really, the acronym is Wine is not an Emulator.

I'm also a Windows hater. My solution is a bit different though.

I've got a Windows box that only runs games, nothing else, running one monitor on a dual-monitor setup. (part-time)
When I am not gaming I can switch the input on this monitor back to my main Linux desktop, and when I am, I use a bit of software called synergy to pass my mouse and keyboard input over to the Windows box just by moving the mouse onto the Windows desktop.

Been running it this way for a while and haven't had any real issues.

Which is a solid reason for removing the antiquated DX version.

It is always possible to dual boot Windows for ESO and then play other games or do your main activities on Linux.

    Why people hate Windows 10

My last windows machine at home was WinXP. It was at Vista that I got sick of Microsoft pushing out badly made operating systems.
They could have improved WinXP-64bit but they chose to push out something else that was half baked.

Win7 is now the stable, dependable version and what I recommend to businesses that insist on a Windows laptop or desktop.

I have recently converted WinXP to Linux boxes for security reasons (and because newer versions of Windows will not run on them), we (work context) have all newer versions of Windows on other machines.
