Firstly for feeling the need to post this but mainly if I have ever dissed pvp in the past....
Out of boredom today (off work ill) decided to take my rather squidgy nb to Cyrodiil. Chose Thornblade as am AD on that toon. Did not have a clue as to what I was doing.
So was being a bit of a tourist, trying to find a fight to watch. But then thought might at least give it a go.....

4 hours later I had to be dragged away from the game to make everyone supper, & now I am itching to get back on and see who's got what.

It was fabulous. Excellent back & forth against EP over one or two resources near Ash. So much fun! So exciting! Utter chaotic lunacy with the occasional voice of reason suggesting a decent plan of action.Yes, there was hideous lag that was almost amusing in how it affected fighting...Yes I died a LOT (not as much as i thought i would). But also killed people & did my bit. And understand why everyone hates nightblades.

I have always been a solo rpg kinda player not really understanding pvp but now I am sold. So I would just like to apologise if I have ever made a disparaging remark about pvp. And I strongly recommend that other usual pve-rs give it a go. It's not a daunting as you may think (tho still not sure why was getting group requests - what is the point?). It's really addictive and such a laugh.

That's all. Thank you for listening. :)

    Welcome to the dark side.

I was like you. I wasn't planning on doing any pvp in this game at all. Then my guild did a Cyrodiil skyshard run. We left a dungeon and a fight was going on at a nearby keep. We got nosy and decided to go take a look. I have been hooked ever since.

I'm totally a PVE player myself - most of the time I have zero interest in PVP. But on those occasions when I feel like it, PVP can really be a lot of fun, even if I'm not very good at it. I've had some super fun times in Cyrodiil and Imperial City.

On a more serious note, PvP can be fun. This one is more fond of the sewers though. Close quarter fighting of both Daedra and players, and of course the tasty rodents for snacks.

How do I do this? I only play PvE and can't even do the first group test because I can't get anyone to play with so, I haven't bothered with PvE. So not having a guild, and just playing alone, what what and how do I do this?

You don't need a group in PvP - 99% of the time I go solo. You can just help out with whatever battles you find there.

Basically, once you hit level 10, go to the alliance war menu, and select a home campaign. I suggest a "non-vet" campaign if your character isn't level 50 yet. Then you can click on that campaign and "enter" it. You'll go to your home base in Cyrodiil. If you haven't before, there are some starter quests that walk you through some basics about siege equipment.

After that, look at the map, and you can see which keeps your alliance owns. You can fast travel to them using the transit network - somewhat like wayshrines. Look on the map for crossed swords - with your alliance color on one of them (the bigger the swords the more fighting there is). Keeps that are kind of "glowing" are under attack. If you hover over them you may be able to see who has siege engines there. Then head out for some fighting!

Enemies will try and kill you from stealth. It is often a good idea to take somewhat out-of-the way paths from one keep to another, and beware you may have to act quickly at any time. That said, your armor doesn't take any damage so there is no real "cost" to dying. Sticking with allies is probably a good way to get started.

A few notes: It is considered polite to have soul gems so that you can rezz others - as they will likely do for you. If someone does rezz you, either take it or reject it - don't just ignore it while you are looking at your death recap or what is going on around you (until you do something they can't rezz anyone else). Also, don't jump on siege unless it's yours. If you see a bunch of your allies all in stealth, don't just go running over to them in plain sight and give their position away (same goes for spamming some of those restro staff heals near those in stealth). And have fun and don't worry about getting wrecked!

Oh I did my best impression of Brave Sir Robin at a couple of points today when blithely riding to join in the battle & then finding a huge group of EP just over the last hill & no AD.

And other times I just died. Quickly.

I have ventured more and more into PVP over the last couple of months after 12 months of nearly all PVE and it is definitely a little addictive. I actually see myself improving and lasting longer in fights and battles (I no longer get 'one shotted') as I change things around.

I still end up dead most of the time but I actually got the achievement the other day for killing an enemy when you are at less than 5% health (right before I died), which made me feel good, even though I still died. The fact that dying in Cyrodiil does not really cost you anything other than time, to respawn and travel again, means that as long as you don't take getting killed personally, you can still have fun. :D

I still generally go solo and find fights here and there, following groups to help take resources, travelling to help defend resources and generally stepping in to help in fights and am having fun. My opinion of PVP is definitely changing for the better.

Welcome to the portion of the game that will ruin the rest of it. Once I started PvP, everything else in the game lost it's color and felt bland and gray. All my previous activities went out the window. Farming? Meh. Exploring. Exboring! Crafting? Whatever.

PvP is unpredictable, engaging, and the very reason many of us play multiplayer games in the first place.

    Welcome, and enjoy!

(Just don't get upset when I take your Tel Var because you were the last one in a 10-person group to make it through the door to the next district).

Congrats on finding fun in Cyrodiil.

I have to say, though, that until you do play with competent groups you're missing out on 75% of what's really going on in AvAvA.

At its best PvP in ESO isn't chaotic, it's just that when you're outside of organized groups it's pretty hard to understand what's going on away from the formless pug zerg in its usual back and forth spots.

ESO PvP at its best is about map-wide strategy. Granted there's sometimes pretty awful bomb groups which steamroll unorganized pugs but then to be a giant ball of AP for groups who know how to deal with them. In fact you could play for 2 straight years and not really ever end up seeing truly deep and organized tactics. But at its best, when you're lucky enough to stumble upon or create such a group, it truly is the best that ESO has to offer.

Well, assuming your enemies are good as well. It can get a little disheartening being in a campaign where the opposition isn't up to anything very intelligent.

The best times I've ever had, therefore, were when the good groups of all three alliances conspired to all move en mass to a campaign away from the constant, pointless pug zerg tug of war and fight one another there. I'm still waiting to recapture that experience but nowadays play at too strange of times and don't have enough play time.
