Xbox one player wondering how the server works.

So the EU server is just one giant server. So there are three alliances. Can you see everyone everywhere? I hear people on my chat saying it depends on what campaign your on and stuff? I am getting confused.

Also I notice any alliance can join any guild? Shouldn't all three alliances be separate?

Also when One Tamerial releases you'll be able to see people from all three alliances.

Also the different alliances have their own instances so you'll only see others of your own alliance. Same goes for the campaigns.
You can join a guild of any alliance but can only claim keeps and such in that guild's alliance and it'll effect teaming up too.

I'll use a building analogy. And we call it 'the server' but that doesn't mean one honking-big single computer.

Server is like a big building. Currently, players log on and are separated into alliances by floor. All reds go to their floor, all blues go to another floor, etc.

On each floor, big huge empty space. Big enough your voice echoes. So the server puts up temporary walls to efficiently manage resources. You log on, get sent to your floor, and are put into a temporary room with some number of hundreds of others of your alliance. Move into a torch-delve or undaunted group dungeon or trial and the server shifts you from that temp room to another temp room just large enough for your group. During off-peak times, this means the server doesn't need to keep spending resources on light and heat for the whole empty space on the floor, just for the temp rooms.

    The temp rooms are 'instances'.

The server rebalances the instances to avoid the extremes. Generally this is what's happening when you seen that 'unusually long load time' message - the server is plucking a bunch of people from overcrowded instances of that area and making a new instance, or is taking two under crowded instances of that area and is combining the people into one so the other can be taken down.

After One Tamriel (1T, OneT) hits, the separation of alliances will stop. So we will be able to see the enemy alliances as they do their level grinding, sky shard hunting, lore book grinding, etc. but the instances will only allow limited combat, go read about dueling for more on that.

And here I was, totally getting excited thinking One Tamriel comes out on the 5th! (Didn't read that that was for the PC).
