Anything I can do to fix crippling lag? Please help if you can!

I've been experiencing extreme lag the last 10 days (been subbed since console release) to the point the game is basically unplayable. I have run multiple tests on my PS4 and it consistently shows between 110-160 Mbps down and 10-14 Mbps up. Yet despite what I would consider very fast internet speeds the game has been unplayable in PvP due to this extreme lag. I've powered down and reset my router, tried wiping the connection settings and then reconnecting my PS, and deleted saved game data for ESO; yet nothing helps. I even tried playing with my NB whom has finished barely any quests compared to my Templar just in case it was an offshoot of the problem that was occurring with too many finished and/or pending quests, yet nothing makes a difference. I can't imagine everyone is having this problem or there likely wouldn't be anyone left in Cyrodill. Does anyone know of anything I can do to fix this issue?

Since the latest patch the lag is even present in pve. Pvp it is even worse. I don't know what they did but it has never benn as bad as this before, don't get me wrong it was already really bad. Now it's totally sh!t, time to unsubscribe forever because Zenimax isn't going to fix it, they only make things worse.

I don't know about forever but I'm not extending my subscription again until it's working a lot better then it is right now. I jump on every day hoping it will be playable but it's been horrible 95% of the time with just a couple of days when I could actually play a couple of hours before the lag got bad enough again that I was forced to sign out. And yes now PvE is broke too. While doing Ruins of Maz the other day there were two times where everything froze for 20-30 seconds then sped up like crazy until it caught back up to what was actually happening. What's really crazy is it got this bad for me 4 days before they dropped that patch. Played on a Thursday and everything was fine, relatively speaking-was laggy but playable, then signed in on Friday and the game was just all F'***ed up and has been since.

Clear out your quest list. Running with a lot of quests adds strain as each second the game is tracking all the location arrows and all event triggers for each quest.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately I had also done that already too but it didn't fix the problem. However I was playing late night/early morning like 1-4 AM and I had some lag but it was playable. There were a few times it dropped frames and registered a couple of seconds worth of damage all at once but it wasn't continuous like it was for a few days there.

Yea, the lag today on PS4 NA is not playable for any dungeons, even picking flower or crafting takes frequent freezes to proceed the action. Just terrible. Crashed multiple times as well. Maybe cos lack of maintenance this week.

If it's connection related, this post I did in another thread might help. It's worth a try.
Have you guys opened the ports on your router? Use port triggering not port forwarding.

I have almost 0 lag since i did it, just follow the information on how to do the triggering. https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/164469/need-help-port-triggering

Then go here for the ports you want to open. Just do the range on the top to start.https://help.elderscrollsonline.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1133/~/what-ports-do-i-need-to-open-to-access-the-game?

Just for clarity, I usually play on vita on my home network so I can keep wife aggro low. This means I'm adding latency and again almost no lag.

Something else to do is give your ps4 priority on your router (I have an ea9200 linksys so I know you can do this on their brand) and this will help keep other traffic from eating bandwidth locally and reduce packets stalling while other devices are moving their packets around.

You may also want to look at your model and try to switch more devices to your 5GHz to remove traffic on your 2.4GHz. I was amazed at the amount of congestion I had on my network. Understand your available bandwidth in your home and see if your demand is more than your router can handle.

You could try mapping the ports to the device name and MAC address instead of to an IP. This way if your router changes the IP for the device and it can, the ports will follow the device. I did this when I had some issues, and I haven't since.

Is it only an issue with this game? The reason i ask is i got a PS4 a few months ago and the wifi was horrendous. My Xbone, tablet, laptop etc etc had no issues, just the PS4. I ended up purchasing homeplugs and hard wired one into the back of my PS4. The difference was night and day. Like most Sony products, the wifi components are awful compared to other manufactures. I have 80mbps fibre and before using the home plugs i was getting around 2mbps on my PS4. All my other wireless devices were getting around the 50ish mark.

Wifi is not advisable for gaming, cable connnections are far more reliable and consistent.

And is your PS4 set up to use wired or wifi? You can have a cable connected to it, but if it's set to wifi in the settings, it will make zero difference if you're using an Ethernet cable. Do a connection test on your ps4 and see what kind of speeds you're getting.

    2 Potential Explanations:

    1) If you have never had good latency/ping times then you need to check you configuration and/or ISP connection. The post above detailing router config is a good start.

    2) If you at times have very good latency/ping response and at times bad latency/ping response then it is not your config or rig.

    -Check this site http://www.internethealthreport.com/Main.aspx?xAxis=Destination&yAxis=Origin&zAxis=Metric&nAxis=Period
*Sometimes the Internet just gets really busy and your packets may be crossing congested Internet backbone routes.

-If the Internet is in a healthy state then it the ZoS network core that is congested and responsible for the poor performance.

In my experience, the ZoS core network is responsible for ~90% of the poor performance issues related to ping/latency.

The overall performance of ESO took a nosedive since 1.6 when it is believed they implemented a cheat detection system. As with any anti-cheat system that checks packet integrity it has a cost which adds overhead to packet processing which in turn adds a delay to packet transmission between clients(players) and their server core. Sometimes it gets so busy that their server core actually drops packets [ping 999] in which case you get all kinds of weird results (skills don't fire, weapon doesn't swap etc.).

While no cheat system is perfect at least we don't have rampant cheating. There is hope that they will continue to fine tune the system and/or upgrade their core capacity if the game remains profitable enough.
