Late to the Party

I was outside working when I came in, the server was down. My basic question is what are the issues that brought the server down. I read something about data lost and login issues, what is that all about? Can a kind soul give a quick recap what is happening with the servers? Thanks!

Servers crashed about 4 hours ago, got brought back up but were still borked somehow so now we have emergency maintenance. No ETA.
