Can someone explain to me how Blocking Mitigation works alongside with Damage Mitigation?

Okay so Armor/Spell Resistances cap at 33,100 which is 50% Damage Mitigation (not blocking)

and Blocking Mitigates... 50% damage? 30%?

How does this work together?

Assume you are a Dragonknight (10% Blocking Mitigation), are at 33,100 Resistances (50% Damage Mitigation), have Defensive Posture (8% Blocking Mitigation) slotted, and have 2 points into Sword and Board (20% Blocking Mitigation).

The link posted by @Lightspeedflashb14_ESO is a thorough breakdown that should answer your question.

The take away is that they stack multiplicatively and the more % resistances you stack, the more diminishing returns you will see on actual damage mitigated.

This is why Footman's Fortune has become less popular as even though the 5 piece states 8% additional shield mitigation, when added on top of all other forms of mitigation it is really an additonial 3ish% mitigation. Many tanks opt for ebon or Alkosh for the group buffs, or Akaviri/Werewolf Hide for Ulti gen resulting in more frequent Warhorns for the group.

So basically what you're saying is... any EXTRA passive/ability that grants extra % Blocking Mitigation is multiplicative?

Assume you are a Dragonknight (10% Blocking Mitigation), are at 33,100 Resistances (50% Damage Mitigation), have Defensive Posture (8% Blocking Mitigation) slotted, and have 2 points into Sword and Board (20% Blocking Mitigation).

So basically what you're saying is... any EXTRA passive/ability that grants extra % Blocking Mitigation is multiplicative?

    Yes.

    So in your example:

    1) 50% mitigation at armor cap
    2) 50% mitigation from blocking
    3) 8% mitigation from Defensive Posture
    4) 20% mitigation from 1H1S passive

    So you would take 0.5(armor mitigation)*0.5(Block)*0.92(Defensive Posture)*0.8(1H1S Passive)= 0.184

If an ability with a base damage of 10,000 hits you with these things applied, you would take 1840 damage

Now if you were to add Footmans 8% the equation would be 0.5*0.5*0.92*0.8*0.92(Footmans)=0.169

Or 1690 damage received on the same hit, a difference of 150 damage.

150/10,000 is 0.015 or 1.5% of the original 10K damage.

Since the calculation is multiplicative, you are constantly shrinking a smaller number by a percentage resulting in dimishing returns.

@MrTarkanian48 So what would happen if I had a Standard of Might (20%)?

    That would be...

    .5 (Armor) * .5 (Block) * 0.92 (Defensive Posture) * .8 (1H&S Passive) * .8 (Standard of Might) = 0.1472,

    1472 Damage taken?

    My head is confused.

Two things to take into consideration though:
1.on frequent big hits like vet HM warrior where he's hitting you for 15k unmitigated 3 times in a row with his flurry, all that mitigation is frequently the difference between life and death, foot mans/histbark is still best in slot for main tanks.
    2. When the weapon ultimates come out in Tamriel one you'll be invincible with almost any decent setup.
