I've recorded my returns from refining raw materials, writs and hirelings for the past couple of weeks and the results are no surprise.
Hirelings are hopeless for getting gold improvement materials, where as writs are the best source.
An interesting stat is that it appears you get twice the improvement material from clothing hirelings..
