Weapon Types - Mace vs Axe vs Sword

I'm slightly out of the loop for stam.
As far as I remember, maces (when possible) would be considered the best choice for 2h and dw - granted, except against damage shields.
However, in PvE people have come to love axes and looking at my enemies (even the somewhat competent ones) I se LOTs of swords.

Have there been any significant changes? Ideally how are extra sword damage and mace penetration used in the damage formulae?

Maces are better for heavy armored builds Black rose stamina builds. While swords are better for medium to light armor. As we all know sharpened rules all.

Afaik, this was (is??) a myth because maces used to give a flat number of armor penetration. Thus, unless you'd reduce enemy armor to 0 (very rarely the case), the percentual damage increase was actually higher the less armor the enemy had. Has this been fixed to actually do what the tooltip says? is it before you other flat mitigation, (sharpenend et al) then?

Even that being said, consider an enemy in light armor with a buff (tp ritual, mage lightning form) and approx 17k armor.
20% is 3400penetration and 3400 mitigation is slightly above 5% more damage recieved. In comparison, swords will increase your WEAPON (and spell) damage by 5% and thus your overall damage (which is also effected by max stam) by less (probably around 3.5% or something).

Hence, I do not understand how you arrive at your rule of thumb. In my book, swords would shine vs damage shields (because they are useful here unlike penetration) but not against normal enemies unless you find something with only 10k armor which would be the case VERY VERY rarely, I guess.

But I'm asking because I'm not 100% sure about this. Especially: is the tooltip of TB&B really accurate? Is it calculated before or after other forms of penetration (sharpened / cp / buffs)
Would really appreciate some insight backed up by actual reasons and not by gut feeling or hearsay...

Search the forums there's a great post about sharpened vs precise vs nirned. I think it's even called that. Lots of math. You might like it.

For pve it's 1 dagger and 1 axe is best in slot unless your a stam templar which it's 2x daggers.

For pvp either a mace or sword does fine, personally if i have some form of major fracture i use a sword if i don't i use a mace.

Sooooo I have three legendary weapons. Leki's axe, dagger and sword, all precise, whic combination is supreme? And in lieu of sharpened, should I just invest 50 points into piercing in the mage CP tree?

Edit: this be for a stam dps attempting vMSA

For PvE: Axe + Dagger [DW rules in DPS]
For PvP: 2H Axe [If it's secondary bar] 2H Mace>Sword [If it's primary bar]. I can't be sure about DW on PvP but Axe/Mace seems to be best option.

Thanks, I gave axe and dagger a spin in spindleclutch, but it turns out just about everything is immune to bleed damage now so it seens axes are redundant.
