Kicked for spamming?

How does one get kicked for spamming while not even using the chat? I was wondering around the IC this morning when something strange happened to me, i had just spotted an enemy and decided it was time to strike. However, since i didn't have the right skills on my bar to engage i used my handy dandy addon to switch to my pre-combat bar by pressing the down arrow and casting my buffs, once my buffs were cast i hit the right arrow to return to my normal in combat bar, switched to my second weapon and used the up arrow key to switch from my stealth bar to my second combat bar. As soon as i had done that something strange happened, my game froze, and i was kicked back to the login screen with a message saying that i had been kicked for spamming despite never using the chat since i had logged on. Was this a mistake? Did using the arrow keys to switch bars cause this? Did someone somehow report me for spamming (is that possible?) as a joke? If anyone has any information on why this might have happened it would be appreciated.

Maybe the game anti cheat detection noticed this and took it for a cheat of some sort ? I am not sure to be honest just guessing .

i certainly hope not, its not like i was swapping sets while in combat..

Gear and bar swap addons have been able to trigger this for quite a while. Generally speaking, one swap of a gear set and both skill bars won't trigger the kick, but two usually puts you right under the threshold for a kick. Adding many more actions or a third swap will usually do the trick and kick you to login.

You got kicked for spamming client messages (like bar swapping or window opening), not text messages. It's a technical term.

It's to prevent the use of bots or extensive macros like you do.

This often happens.
Cause is often a "server hiccups" or a short internet hiccups on your side.
The server does not receive any of your stuff written.
But then everything comes at once and this is where the anti-spam measure kills you back to login.

Spamming the server refers to initiating too many actions too quickly. If you or the server are laggy even a few initiations can count as heavy spam. My internet lagged severely last night and I got kicked from the server for doing just a few things, including dying...

Fun fact: Promoting and Demoting Guild Members too much in rapid succession will trigger a warning that the server will drop you if you keep it up.

I do believe this is against the ToS. Once you are starting to cast buffs/etc, you are in combat, and I think ZoS has said macros in combat is cheating.

i could have easily done it without macros, it just takes like around a second longer. will remove addon if its a problem

i could have easily done it without macros, it just takes like around a second longer. will remove addon if its a problem

i timed it and it takes around 5 more seconds to do it without the addon

When doing things at more than "human" speed, it appears you are triggering cheat detection software of some kind.

This happens to me on ps4 when my Internet is running slow. Always wondered what it was. I guess with the lag it thinks I'm doing too much in too short a time.

Yeah, when there's significant lag and you hit a bunch of keys the messages from hitting those keys can build up and then hit the server all at once. That's the most common cause of being kicked for spamming.

I've also noticed if you lag and all your abilities go off at the same time this happens.

There are several addons that use something that the game mistakenly detects as chat spamming. I use one skill-bar set-up and switch addon called "Swaps" that will do this if I pick a couple of bars and change my mind and redo it. I've never been kicked using it but I have gotten in-game warnings about chat with messages like "slow down" or some such thing a few times.
