Just got my lizardplar up to 50, and gearing up. I have a suspicion the ritual might not be the best stone to use. Magicka regen isn't really a problem so I'm thinking mage or apprentice. Opinions?

Use the Thief. The extra crit chance makes your heals crit a lot more often, alongside increasing your DPS
I used to use the Ritual, but when I switched to the Thief, I probably got a 25% increase in DPS, and my healing increased by about the same.

Thief is good for almost all situations and you never really have to change it if you already have good recovery.
The ritual seems pretty useless to me as in 4 man content you can hit a breath of life or two and have everyone at full health with or without the extra percentage. Even in trials where you'll be spamming heals on everything, your main heal is healing springs and combat prayer, it's really about how frequently you can cast healling springs and how many people you can hit, not how much the heals land for. Even if you were really concerned about how much you could hit for, the thief would bring your crit% to like 63-66% with a precise weapon and champ point boon. With the extra champion points we just got, your crit heals land for 70% more than non crits and that extra 10-16ish crit% is helpful. You COULD run a completely non crit build and just stack a powered staff with ritual and it might work well, I've just never tried it because I like higher crit percentages.
Atronach is great for hardmode trials and being able to run max magicka food for stronger heals if you have recovery issues.
A lot of this is really situationally dependent. How good your group is at avoiding damage and how good your bar setup and reaction time is when you need to get your heals casted. There isn't one correct answer but rather a couple reasonable choices.
Thief, as most people have said. For the reasons they said as well but I would like to go on to say that I have tried the ritual mundas on my healer. Of course gave my heals much more but I found a problem with it. Sometimes after dieing and getting ressed or ressing myself, it would stop working. Like it would say it was, on it charator sheet but my heals were smaller. I keep track of the size of my heals pretty closely.
This was not a problem if I did not die at all. And it fixed itself when I zoned or relogged but having that chance of unreliability Iis too much for me. So that is why I still to the thief.

In my opinion Atronach > Thief > Ritual. If you have good regen go with thief. You rarely need extra healing power in this game, and if you do there is still a champion point star for it, powered weapons, etc. in addition to all the ways you can buff spell power, spell crit and so on.

If you go back and forth a lot between Healing and DPS, and you are tired of swapping Mundus signs, I recommend Thief.
Once you unlock Eastmarch and Alik'r Desert, you'll find the Thief and Ritual stones, respectively, wayshrine adjacent. Closer than a pledge pick up in Wayrest.
Now your attributes, armor sets, CP, class, and weapon traits will all affect your healing. Rather than except blanket mathematical advice, which often times assumes these details of your build, look at where your specific deficiencies are.
It also matters what content you run, and who with. A lot of DPS don't hit 20k health, and some of the squishier ones will really test your sustain. A couple breaths of life will usually top off the team after a big hit either way. It's also really easy to get a good dps rotation going on a Templar. If you do swap roles, Thief, (plus maybe a powered restro staff), will make swapping easier.
If you plan to hit pvp at all, even if it's just to unlock war horn and barrier, I recommend Ritual, as it will increase your AP return on wall repairs.
Thanks guys. I like to mix it up a bit. I farm, so I'll need some dps, plus I like to pvp as well. I think I'll give each a try and see how they work for me. The thief sounds enticing so that is a good place to start.
If you want the strongest possible heals without RNG crits - Ritual
If you have sustain issues - Atronach
If you want some extra dps and healing - Thief
Apprentice isn't all that useful just because more crit means much more damage than the Apprentice.
Mage is about on par, maybe marginally better, than Apprentice depending on build.
The Thief is the best with the understanding that if you ever run out of magicka - and constantly heavy attacking to refill your blue bar counts as running out - you should have taken the Atronach instead.
For PvP healing, I would the Atronach is probably the better choice though as sustain is much more important.
Make Rush of Agony "Monsters only." People should not be consecutively crowd controlled in a PvP setting. Period.
If you don't have magicka issues, I'd recomend thief in your current situation. For dungeons where you as healer also do some damage it's clearly superior. For trial hardmodes ritual can be better, but once you get to that point, you'll have enough experience to figure out what works best for your group setup.
