Mudcrab Chitin and the drop rate

Didn't want to bring an old thread back to life but does anyone know if it's just my bad luck or what with Chitin? I've spent hours killing small families or Mudcrabs in Grahtwood and got like 1 chitin. I'm on ps4/NA if that means anything

I get them often but I've killed thousands now and still haven't dropped the polished shell shard I've been after.

I've had 6 and go out of my way to kill crabs, but not farming more on way to xxx walk and kill- over wayshrine etc . a friend who is always pvping came out killed 3 crabs got 2..... Clearly RNG just hates some of us.

Mudcrab chitin is not just a matter of RNG.

Some zones, like Wrothgar, never drop chitins at all, while other zones, like Ebonheart in Stonefalls, drop them like 30-40 % of the time.

I'm not sure if this i intentional by ZOS, or merely yet another sloppy implementation by them. But there you go.

Have you done any testing since the patch? I haven't done any real testing, but in Wrothgar the day of the patch I killed two mudcrabs and they both dropped chitin then I killed two more and one of them did. It was either insane luck or they might have increased the drop rate.

I can also say I've had pretty bad luck with the Chitin.
I've found out they drop about 1/4 times in Khenarthi's for me on DC, yet in wrothgar or dungeons such as fungal that feature mudcrabs I never get any.

Then you go kill spiders or scribs almost anywhere and drop is pretty much 100%, it does seem pretty silly.

If you look at the Mudcrabs more closely, you'll notice that they are not all alike. Most of them are kind of grey or colorless but some of them have a dark brown, almost red shell. These red Mudcrabs are the ones who drop Mudcrab Chitin like crazy. Check out the south-eastern area of Grahtwood (the beach near Haven) for example. There are perhaps about 10 red Mudcrabs on that beach so you should notice the difference in color between the Mudcrabs...

Of course there are those areas too where every Mudcrab is a red one but that's a story for another day... ;)

ps. I just noticed the other day while doing the Cadwell's Gold quest line that even the grey Mudcrabs dropped the chitin quite often. I don't know if that's the case in every gold area map or if there's something special about Stros M'Kai.

When the new DLC comes to console, all mudcrabs will drop the chitin, not just the dark brown ones. I'm on PC and before the DLC they were hard to get, now nearly every mudcrab I kill I get one.

I think it varies from zone to zone- I was doing a few quests that required me to go to stonefalls, killed some mudcrabs for fun, got chitin pretty much every time.

Yeah last week I was going to level alchemy up in pretty much one go so I had a look through my crafting bag to see what I could easily afford to get rid of making a load of potions and while most stacks are in the 100s my mud crab chitin stack was like 12, was really confused as I have killed 100s of the buggers and they always drop a ton of loot. I now when not doing much run up and down beaches waging a one man war against them.

Seems like I get mudcrab chitin more often from random mudcrabs in Cyrodiil after update 11.

Not interested in the chitin, though - prefer when they drop rubedo leather scraps. Maybe the key is you need to be looking for something else.

Wow.. I did not realize it's that intricate with the different colors of mudcrabs. All I can say is, it was a task and a half going around killing 500 mudcrabs towards the monster hunter achievement. They also freak me out in Frugal Grotto. Lol!

I was just in Grahtwood two nights ago, and near Haven, found plenty of Chitin. Note, this was a Gold Instance of Grahtwood, not a leveling instance.

Today, I'm noticing a great drop rate in Grahtwood (Normal). Red, grey, colour doesn't seem to matter.

Wonder if they changed it. A guildmate mentioned that he was getting them from all types of crabs.

Lots of Mudcrab Chitin in Wrothgar.
My stack was 1k or so when this dropped:

We should have fought for our village and not have backed down, with our tail between our legs. Only red-colored mudcrabs (the ones with the higher HP compared to their brown counterparts) seem to drop Chitin and the Polished SHell Shard. I killed literally over ten thousand mudcrabs trying to get the Shell Shard, realized towards the end that they weren't dropping Chitin either. I switched to the red mudcrabs and got tons of Chitin plus the Polished Shell Shard after only about 700 kills!

Must be an RNG issue. I farmed this morning up and down the coast of Malabal Tor (I was actually trying to fish and farming in between). I think I got about 40 Chitin in less than an hour. They were dropping from about 1/3 of the crabs. I didn't pay attention to the color of the crabs though.

The drop rate is very high for me. The starter areas like Auridon & Khenarthi's Roost have the highest drop rates.

Yes, this is correct. Not all mudcrabs are considered "mudcrabs". The chitin drop rate is ~20% at the minimum. So if you have killed like 50 crabs and have not gotten a single drop, FIND ANOTHER PLACE TO FARM.

I can confirm that the low health mudcrabs, tan ones, drop chitin now. Verified in Leveling zone Grahtwood near Haven. Did not test other zones. Cuz, finding single low health mudcrabs is not all that easy, they are usually grouped with a high health one. So, this should give a good drop rate now as all crabs should drop the chitin.

Any chance you can test the beaches of Betnikh? DC second starter island? That contains 100% brown mudcrabs and was where I originally tried to farm things. If stuff is dropping there then they at least fixed the Chitin drops, if not the collectibles drop.

I keep running out of chitin for crafting. I haven't seen a polished shell yet, but I don't keep more than a small store of chitin , either.
