So as I'm sure everyone is noticing, the Japanese version of the game has launched as of a few weeks ago! Very exciting! But now there's an even greater chance that someone is going to say something in zone in a language you can't understand, yes? Yes! BUT!! If you're on PC, there is a solution, and it was actually incredibly fun to use.
A little while after the launch of the Japanese version, PC NA Trueflame started getting an occasional line of Japanese text in zone chat. I don't speak, read, or write any form of Japanese, but I use an addon called "Pchat" that lets me copy text from in-game to the computer's clipboard. I was able to paste it into Google Translate and more or less find out what they were saying. And it was really basic stuff! "Where is the attack", "Keep needs defense", "How many?", etc. I was able to respond, again using Translate, more or less in a way the player could understand, and fun was had by all.
Fast forward to last night around 3 AM. The player sends me an invite and I find myself in his all-Japanese dungeon group. They were all pretty low-level so I thought "hey, should be easy"! Unfortunately, I mistook the leader's Champion Rank 19 for actual level 19. We go in and the poor level 21 and 25 in our group are dying left and right to the CP 10 skeletons. "Let's do the Auridon dungeon" they said. "It will be easy" they said. We were so wrong!!
Now, before I had noticed that Google doesn't translate certain key MMO words like "leader", "group", "dungeon", etc., so I was trying to explain (quite poorly) what was wrong and what we needed to do. But eventually we figured it out!! We left the dungeon, reformed group with the lowest-level member, and then plowed through before I fell asleep at the keyboard.
Anyway, I just thought folks would like to know that cross-language communication is possible and incredibly rewarding in this game, so long as you use the right tools. I don't know if console can do anything similar, but at least it's a working fix for the PC crowd! I also managed to grab a single screenshot at the last minute, not very high quality but it's still going to be a nice memory. UI turned off to preserve privacy.
