Dunmer voice acting

Hello all, quick question about the dunmer voices in ESO. Since when did they change the voices of the dunmer from that cool scratchy tone we heard in morrowind? Was this changed in oblivion / skyrim? Or just for eso. It kind of threw me off slightly when I heard the dunmer talking normally. Just curious why the khajit and argonians were able to keep their voices and the dunmer were changed. Thanks !

I agree the dunmer in this game seem like humans with a different skin, they lack a certain magic from past games.

Yeah I agree, while the voice acting already in place isn't bad in and of itself, I definitely do prefer the voice acting done for dark elves in Morrowind.
Beware the battle cattle, but don't *fear* the battle cattle!

This is a 1000 years before other games time . Maybe this is before they all contracted raspy asthma voices ? Really shouldn't live next to volcanos for great on key singing voices ...

I don't know that "scratchy voice" was ever really canon for dark elves... that may have just been how the one male voice actor played it for Morrowind. You remember the female Dunmer voice in Morrowind? "Speak quickly, Outlander, or go away"? Literally the exact same voice that actress does for Dunmer in later games.

As someone who occasionally does voice work, I cannot imagine how hard that would be on the throats of the actors if they all had to play an entire race that way. They'd have to save all Dunmer lines until the end of each day's recording session, because their voices would be shot doing all those lines at full rasp. XD

    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

(Signature idea shamelessly stolen from Abeille.)

Apparently the morrowind male dunmer voice was done by one guy, and he couldn't do it any more because it was ruining his voice. He came back as a cameo in dawnguard

I think there might have been some vague lore justification, that the deep voices were specifically the effects of living in Vvardenfell with all the ash storms, and dunmer from the mainland had more normal voices
