As many others have said here, you really need to burn that boss fast. He's a "damage check" of sorts, in order to make sure your damage is on par for the rest of the arena. To be a bit more specific, he shouldn't teleport more than twice. A third being barely acceptable. If he teleports more than three times, you're not ready to handle vMA.

As for some specific advice on how to go about beating him, if you do want to go about doing it the long and grueling way? Or rather the "mechanics way"? Take care of the adds as soon as they're summoned, and focus immediately on the boss afterward. All the while avoiding: Ground traps, the orb that follows you, and managing the attacks that the boss is dealing to you. Follow those mechanics, and you will succeed.

Get rid of briarheart imo.. You shouldnt use a set that MIGHT proc on VMA you need guaranteed numbers.

Anyway move around him and constantly hit him. As soon as the spawn comes up use dawnbreaker on them both then kill the spawn.
Keep using resolving vigor every few seconds and repeat.

Watch some You Tube videos on vMA boss mechanics, and study up on your build. If you're struggling with the 1st boss, you don't stand a chance at the rest. I'm not meaning to be disparaging, but speaking honestly. It will be extremely frustrating for you to push on in vMA without sorting your gear, skills and rotation first.

I say this as someone who can clear the first few rounds pretty easily without dying, but has a toon forever stuck on round 6 and one on round 9. It (and now vMOL) is the only end game content I haven't completed. As much as I would like the achievement and title and mostly the weapons, I accept that it will take much more time and effort than I'll put in. So ill endure the mocking from my Stormproof and Flawless guildies.

He will consume the remaining health of the adds he summons and that remaining health will heal the boss. So you either need to do more dps than he is getting from heals, or stop and kill the adds before they become a heal, then switch back to the boss. Also there are little blue shapes floating in the air around the battle field that will give you bonuses like more dps or healing or defense. Use those to help you.

Here is a good guide on it. Joy's updated guide to beating Maelstrom Arena

First time try using the sigils to help.
Try not to let him teleport many times, each teleport is more adds and its their damage combined with his that will kill you.
Watch out for his aoe, it snares and hurts alot.
Generally ignore the adds and focus on the boss.
You need to be able to heal whilst doing damage if at all possible.
Vigour is your friend but it won't save you ass if your low on health - so keep it up 100% to try to keep yourself topped up (and dodge roll with vigour running is helpful).
Have some means of resource regeneration.
    Don't stop moving.

Finally what class, and what quality of gear.
Also post build if you want it critiqued.

@Valn ... what would really help is if you could post your current build, then we can look at it and see where you can make changes to increase this. 2k is very low for weapon damage.

It's not a build issue (although that can be improved), it's a skill issue. I'd like to ask you a series of questions:
What platform and server do you play on?
    What abilities do you use?
    What's your CP allocation?
Do you play in first person?

It's either your playstyle or gear. As a DK you need to stack DoTs. Keep poison injection, arrow barrage, caltrops, and one of your poison DoTs up at all times. Then do wrecking blow spam until execute range.

For gear, you at least need gold weapons. This adds a couple hundred weapon damage alone. Make sure you use a weapon damage enchant on your weapon. All weapon damage enchants on jewlery too. You should be able to get in the upper 3k range with weapon damage easily.

Drop EG for Bloodspawn. It'll get you ulti quicker for getting your resources back anyway. Use with corrosive and you'll be fine. I've just done it without vigor on mine. Alliance rank 0 ftw.

Just use bow bar for hail, injection, breath, that's all I touched.

Front bar. Claw, reverse slice, rally, crit rush, and flames for the extra crit. Just mash away and span slice at 40% and that'll be fine. But use corrosive when you really need to burn and not at the start. I usually pop it when I'm about to die / run out of stam / execute range and go nuts, your claw will give you ticks of over 11k alone with corrosive on so put all your dots up first and then pop it to make the most of the 100% armor reduction.

when he spawns the adds put down some aoe like endless hail etc to take out the adds, then focus the boss. I never focus any adds I just let the aoes take care of them while I focus the boss.

if you are really struggling just grab the sygills thats why they are there.

I think you need to reassess your build. I have only ever been in normal MA but if it is the same bosses then each boss is more difficult than the previous, so if you cannot get past one without a lot of difficulty, then you need to reassess and keep practicing.
