When will auto quest tracking ever be fixed?

Two years now, and although I think this is one of the best MMOs on the market it has bar none the worst auto quest tracking in the business.

It is brutally frustrating accepting a new quest, and then have the auto quest tracker select something else, like an old quest. The only way to avoid this would turn this into a linear game; delete all quests, and every time you get a new quest, you have to do it.

It is especially frustrating in the middle of a quest chain. In other words, finish say Stage 2 of the quest, then the quest tracker indicates your oldest quest is now active instead of stage 3. Having the auto quest tracker revert is disorientating.

It is the single biggest issue i have with the game. I know, first world problems because I love the rest of the game so much.

Are there any add-ons to fix this or is permanently hard coded?

I use Fully Customizable MultiQuest Tracker and, with respect, have no idea what you're talking about. So I'm assuming that addon cleans up the issue completely. It was probably some option I set in 2014 and have long since forgotten about.

I should add, it does still switch active quests when you make progress on an inactive quest. But, it's much less of an issue because all of your current quests are visible in the UI.

Happens all the time, takes literally seconds to hop into the journal to select the right one again. It's annoying sure, but there are real bugs that need addressing first.
