Suggested class/weapon/armor combo for new player/first character?

What would you suggest for a new player to take to max level first? My thoughts are:
  • Survivable while I learn the game and make many, many mistakes
  • Able to handle even level content easily
  • Decent damage for soloing

I would not be worried about grouping or PvP. Just something to do PvE quest leveling, exploration, and learning the ropes. After reading a lot I thought maybe a Templar in plate with a 2H. That would give DPS, a bubble from the 2H, self heals, protection from heavy armor. I am not sure if you go Magik or Stam - maybe heals are useless unless you go Magik? Not sure.

Anyhow, thanks for any advice. I do not want to be uber. I just do not want to be squishy (because I stink at dodging and blocking) or so weak I cannot kill even con quest bosses.

Templars are probably the easiest solo character for PvE, as your main attack heals you and the main heal will bring you back from almost death. Plus, they can lay down the damage quite well.

As for Leveling, well, gear really does not matter. Just use what drops from Mobs as you level. One thing, do wear at least one from each type of armor weight (light, medium, heavy) so you level all 3. This way you can swap out armor types end game and not have to grind it up.

Have one skill from each of your classes on your bar at all time. Classes level the slowest, and you want them at 50. The other two slots can be skills you use or other skills you want to level.

As for what weapon to use, if your going Stamina, use a Melee or Bow, if your going Magic, use a Destro Staff.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Another point, if you think your going to Craft, start researching traits now. Knowing traits allows you to make Crafted Sets, and those give you a lot of power. You can learn 2 to 3 traits fairly quickly and start making sets, but the good stuff is going to take a lot longer. There are threads on how to do trait research, and what traits to focus on first, in the Crafting section.

    Regardless of class remember this:

    1) Have at least 1 of each 3 class skill lines on your main bar while leveling.

    2) have at least 1 of each type of armor while leveling (this will level all 3 types at once making it easier for you if you want to swap between magica and stamina later)

    3) until level 15 have 1 abillity sloted from the weapon tree you want for the second bar.

I find stamina to be easier but it might be because both of my characters I play on are khajiit and their racials are better for stamina than magica. On my main I used 2h and Bow to level but swaped the 2h to DW around vet 2-4 (level 50 and 20-40 CP).

Thanks! Question about heals - do they scale off Magika? I mean if I go Stam Templar will my self heals be useless?

The stamina morph of puncturing strikes will not heal you and the heals are magicka based but there is a good stamina based heal from the PvP skill line called Vigor.

It'll be less powerful and you won't be able to cast many, but it can still save your life.

Also, as stamina templar, you will always finish the fight full health and stamina with Repentance.

    Races:

    High Elf (Altmer) for magicka

You can specialise and do other combo's later so pick one from the list I mentioned they are in order of easiest & most fun

From what you are describing I think you may want to go stam DK.

You have the most damage mitigation without blocking, resource generation from ultimate and you don't really need to dodge roll so much.

You will need to go pvp for vigor, but stam DK is one of the best pvp class right now
Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.
