1. Try to avoid high population areas such as Daggerfall Town, Wayrest, Mournhold, Elden root, Rawl'kha. If you need to do inventory clear/crafting and Banking be creative and use the starting island areas like Dhalmora/Bal Foyen, Stros M'Kai/Betnikh, Vulkhel Guard/Skywatch.
2. Remember - all undaunted pledge areas are outside the city centre of the capitals. If you need to go pick up the pledges, use an external wayshrine, and WALK (ie, unmounted) into the undaunted pledge area.
3. Sorry to say it, but avoid Cyrodiil and PvP. Its just a crash and lag fest of unbelievable proportions. Unless of course, you want to PvE, in which case, use Azura's Star. Yes, I know, No CP, but when you are top level, it makes doing the quests in Cyrodiil a little more challenging. However, the sewers are (in my experience) ok to go to. For that, after you get in at the gates, zone into a fort that isn't under attack, and make a beeline for the nearest sewer entrance, which you should be able to do mounted as there will be no other players around you (much!).
4. Wrothgar - Sorry to say it, but at this point in time, the writs are off the table. Just don't do them. Areas outside the city are ok, but just don't go into the city.
Using this method, I very rarely if ever crash out. Not to say it doesn't still happen on the odd occasion, but its a lot rarer.
As an additional tip, I would say use the silver/gold versions of the cities and towns where possible. The much lower populations more or less guarantee that you are safe to go into the capitals, and I rarely if ever get lag.

1. Play another game and hope a patch fixes things easiest way to avoid crashes on Xbox One for the most part

One way those players affected by performance issues can help both ZOS and themselves is by posting about their issues on the appropriate technical support forum for their platform rather than on the general discussion board. That way their posts are more likely to be read by the appropriate technical staff who do post themselves from time to time and when they ask for any additional information that will help them replicate the problem and find a fix for it. Moreover, the technical issues then get exposure rather than being buried in pages of threads about costume prices, passive skill changes, crafting bags and all the other FOTM complaints.
One aspect of performance issues generally that I'd be interested in knowing more about is whether people lagging badly in e.g. Cyrodiil are using cabled or wireless internet connections.
If people stop playing it shows how bad the game is they know how many people are playing if they suddenly lose lets say 1/4 of its current player base over a few weeks or even month that might set off some red flags and one of two things will happen either ZOS will get into gear and fix the problems or either the current dev team will be out of a job or ESO will be no more

Microsoft has not given Xbox One a firmware update in months. I blame Microsoft.

So Microsoft should create a firmware update to help Zenimax with their incompetence? Name one online based game on Xbox one that crashes as much as ESO. If all games on the console performed equally as bad as ESO your comment would be valid. Unfortunately, it isn't. I say unfortunately because if Microsoft was to blame, the issue would have been fixed yesterday.

Blows my mind that ZOS isn't making this top priority. Instead, they unleash the next DLC. Sorry to say it, but they are going to lose a lot of players (and money). There are plenty of other games and MMOs out there without these game breaking issues.
