Player Housing in PTS Patch Notes.

World Building
A few new buildings were added to several zones, and the zone maps were updated accordingly. These buildings are not accessible at this time. In some of these locations, wildlife, and/or bystanders were removed or adjusted to make way for the new construction. In addition, some residents have been moved from their homes, and those buildings are no longer accessible. These changes are in preparation for the upcoming release of Player Housing.

Excited to look for these locations to get an idea of where we will be able to build player homes once they are released.

It does sound like some homes may be purchased "as is" and some might be sold as plots to build your own.

    Very interesting.

EDIT: I read the statement again and it sounds like the homes will already be built. I am unsure about being able to build our own.

Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."

We need to organize an expedition. Let's find ALL of these locations and post here, maybe?
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

I'd much prefer they do Guild Housing first. Player housing is fairly useless. Guild Houses, however, can be upgraded to have crafting stations (maybe even new sets?), training areas (duels?), specific vendors/banks/fences/etc... They can serve such a greater purpose. And, wouldn't require any 'construction' in already designed areas - just make them pockets in Oblivion, we have a ton of room on the map to include five circles around the edge for guild housing. And then, the guild can purchase several different models, including 'outside' areas growing reagents, or nodes for mats...

It is kind of strange, isn't it? I'll be sitting in my house, playing a game where I'll be sitting in my house... *my brain hurts*

Seriously though, I'm looking forward to player housing. When I'm not out adventuring, I hope to have a place to display my weapons, armor, etc.

    @imnotanother

I doubt we could ever have the outside as a build it as you go type of house, being an MMO, they need to be able to present a consistent World Structure to everyone in the game.

However, I am sure the Interiors can be, or at least should be, upgradable. Then it won't matter if one has lots of improvements and others don't, they will still have the same overworld.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

They could give us courtyard "exterior" areas, so that there's a wall up all around the garden, and you can grow flowers in your garden while still being part of the area only rendered to the owner and not passersby.

The only mmorpg that I have played so far, which did player housing properly, was Star Wars Galaxies. That game had lots of flaws, but the housing part was great. You had different building deeds for the different planets (also generic ones that could be built on "buildable" planets), and in addition to the houses themselves you could create player cities. The different styles of the houses was a great asset to that part of the game, which got enhanced by decorating them in unique ways. As the game was sandbox-style, decorating the houses was extremely flexible (very much unlike Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is way too rigid, and in latter the "house" is an instance: which is a horrible idea). Basically you could place anything anywhere, and it was easy to create macros for the movement-commands. Another thing that was really good was that certain quest-rewards and drops were tailormade for decorating your different homes (example: a unique beast head to put up on the wall). The different sources of light, coming from a big variety of lamps and the like, made it possible to create quite an extra-ordinary feel to your favorite home. Furthermore: the decorations were items that could be crafted by the players (which would be a nice touch: not making everything something that players need to buy for real money off the Crown Store, for a change...).

What truly made this part of that game shine was the player cities. The cities could be expanded as the amount of houses and inhabitants grew, and with bigger sizes came the option of adding different public buildings to the cities. And such buildings, like for example cantinas, hotels or hospitals, gave buffs to the inhabitants. It was a great extra source of fun and depth to the game, and we had parties in the cantina every single Friday for many, many months (with dancers, dancing competitions, musicians playing, etc.). In that game, playing an instrument or performing a dance, were professions. And listening to, or dancing with such performers, also gave buffs that could be used in the game later on. If we wanted special kind of Star Wars-music we rented an in-game jukebox for the duration of the party. And if a city grew big enough it would be listed on the map with its own space shuttle. In our favorite mmorpg (yes, that is tESO) the "shuttle" would of course be a wayshrine: fast travel back and forth. Usually guild leaders would also be the founding mayors of those player cities, and recruiting new members often included a house deed to be placed within that city limit. That was a sound way of both making the guild and city grow. However, it was not required that a city contained members of a given guild. And the game also had the option of making votes for whom should be the next mayor. A nice political device, if the community wanted that touch of democracy to it.

I am not saying that ZeniMax Studios should incorporate all what Star Wars Galaxies had in terms of player housing. But they should take notes. So far all other mmorpgs I have played after that title have failed in getting anywhere near that level of quality when it comes to player housing. All. So far I have played: Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Age of Conan: Hyberian Adventures, Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Elder Scrolls Online and Guild Wars 2. And of course: not all of these titles do have player housing. For one, The Elder Scrolls Online doesn't. But we should have it. The game is very suited for it. What about Skyrim? Was that way of player housing as good as what was found in Star Wars Galaxies? You are joking, right? Skyrim was not even close, in this respect. Houses in Skyrim felt like hotel rooms, in comparison. In the game mentioned you had homes. Your home. Skyrim never achieved that. Big, big quality gap.

@ludvique Really enjoyed your post and you make some really good points. I so wished that I had stuck it out with SWG when it first launched. Just not a sci-fi fan and unfortunately we started having some unfortunate guild politics at the time. Played for a bit and left. I really regret that. From what I heard, there were so many great ideas in SWG and your post was a good read. Wanted to comment and give you a +1.

I've played quite a few games with player housing and unfortunately some of them left me feeling rather blah with regards to one of my most favorite aspects of an MMO. I think that some games have done quite well though. EQ2, Wildstar, Rift for example. Wildstar, even though instanced, was so creative in what players could do. Same with EQ2. I would spend hours visiting various houses and enjoy what talented and creative players could do.

I'm open minded but if housing were to be hook based systems like LOTRO or SWTOR (from what hubby tells me), I will be disappointed. Having player cities in ESO would be really neat. And let us build our house. Anyone remember Horizons? Spent many months designing and building my plot. A guildmate and I bought adjoining plots and were in the process of building a huge estate. I was so bummed when they started merging servers and the game started floundering.

Housing can be such a fun diversion and keep one invested in a game. Fingers crossed that Zen has some intriguing ideas for us coming out next year.
