NB Armor Question

NB players have a skill available called Shadow Barrier, which grants 5280 physical and spell resistance for 2 secs every time they activate a shadow ability, and this duration is increased for each piece of heavy armor.. I have 2 questions for this

1: I don't NEED heavy armor to have the basis version right?
2: Is it worth it to actually equip a piece of heavy armor to get this bonus duration?

A lot of people run 5-1-1 for the undaunted passive so I would see this as just an added bonus.

There is that .. But the thing is that each piece of med armor removed, lowers my crit
