Improving Fishing

I have been fishing a lot working towards the master angler title and while I am enjoying it myself many think I am nuts to try for the title being the reward is only a title and a dye. I think adding a fishing skill line would be a great way to make it better.

Yes I know getting perfect roe is already a perk of fishing, but I could do that just staying in one zone and never going for the title.

Skill line ideas: (all passives)

Bait Mastery 0/3: Increase your odds of catching a rare fish when using baits that are caught while fishing by 5/10/15%

Fishery Management 0/3: Increase the number of casts a fishing hole will last by 3/6/9 casts if fishing solo

Fisherman's luck 0/2: Enable wet gunny sacks to have purple with one point and gold with 2 point for temper chances just as we can get purple and gold runes now randomly in them.

Fish Knowledge 0/3: Reduce damage taken from slaughterfish by 2/4/6%

Master Angler 0/1: 10% chance to catch a large fish that has better odds of a perfect roe when upon filet. (Must have master Angler title to unlock this one)

Edit: I forgot to define how experience would be gained, it would come from the first time you catch a rare fish in each zone. Catching the same rare again would give much less as well.

Yes, I like your theory of the idea.

One problem though is that fishing is largely a finite activity within the game, in terms of it's wider appeal just now. Sure, once we have the title we can continue to fish for Perfect Roe or similar, but that is not really enough for the player base as a whole.
For a passive skill line to be useful I really think fishing would have to be expanded. One way to do this would be to provide daily missions that were available from the various NPC anglers across Tamriel. They could be of various types/difficulties/durations/etc (e.g. catch 1/2/3 of one/many type/s of rare fish) and provide useful daily rewards, experience and gold. Perhaps some nice set pieces? Really, like you say, at the end of the day it's the quality of the reward provided that drives the popularity of the activity.

Personally I'd love to see fishing be expanded upon. It would be a great, social activity we could do in-game whilst interacting with friends, in a more relaxed way than public dungeons or world bosses etc, are. And whilst the issue of fishing has been brought up sporadically over the years, sadly there just does not seem to be enough of the community that is interested in it to get that critical amount of support from the player base going, which in turn would result ZoS development taking notice.

    Perhaps one day.
If you can be anything, be kind.

I would like to see changes to fishing to make it more than just pushing a button. I think you should actually have to land the fish. Watch your bobber and if it runs right you pull your pole to the left, if it runs away from you you drop the pole some to give line and so on. Trophy fish would be slightly harder to catch than the white fish.

Would also be fun if you had a small chance of catching a mini boss, and when you bring it in it aggros on you until you or it is dead.

Might be fun if they introduced new purple and maybe even yellow fish to the game that can be caught only with the bait you get from fishing (like chad) and with a special pole that can only be used in areas where you have completed the achievement. The purple and yellow fish could then be used for new recipes or when you clean them have a chance of acting like a large sack? Something more than just a trophy though.

I have no idea if it is feasible to do any of that from a programming stand point, but would be fun if they could put it in.
and then the parrot said, "must be the water mines green too."

A way to have more people fishing, is adding a few more things:
When fishing, you have a chance to
    - find newly introduced ingredients for crafting like alchemy or provisioning
    - very rarely find treasure chests, which can contain a legendary upgrade material, a good amount of gold, a set piece(out of a few selected sets)

Also a small mini game could be a fun addition

This. Fishing would need an overhaul more than just improvements. I never fish. It's the poorest feature in game by miles, when it could be made fun for cheap.

Agree with kargen's suggestions about landing the fish becoming tricky, also the "fishing spots" are such a cheap system, let us fish anywhere and figure the best spots by ourselves, learning wich fish tends to dwell where etc..

And a skill line would definitely fit in a richer system

I enjoy fishing from time to time, and wish there was more to it. Love the skill line idea. Maybe fishing could be added as a craft? We could then have daily writs. perhaps some poisons could be obtained from fish as well? after all there are poisonous fish. How about a nice filet knife? Maybe the knife can improve chances of getting perfect roe.

All the extra ideas are wonderful.

People have said not enough bother fishing for it to be address, but doesn't that kind of say it really does need to be addressed to give more incentive for people to do it :3

I would be satisfied with the chance to fillet rare catches like any other fish. No improved chances, no special treatment.

I just caught a shark and now I have to either sell it or throw it away...

Why can't I eat it ? That makes me sad...
