newb question about weapon damage

How exactly is that calculated? Obviously the "damage" actually listed on the weapon is not the literal amount of damage you do with that weapon.

For example, with a staff that has a "287" in its damage. Its not doing 287 damage, which I'm almost positive its not supposed to (right?). So how IS damage calculated? What raises it, what lowers it?

Well, lots of things go into the equations, and it's not just one equation either, some equations factor into other equations. It all starts with the Weapon Damage though, increase that, and you leverage that increase through all the other equations, factoring in the Bonuses where appropriate.

You have Champion Passives, Racial Bonuses, Skill Passives, Set Item Bonuses, Active Skill Bonuses, Bonuses from other Party Member's Skills (there might be a couple of others, but you get the idea)

I have not found a similar page for strictly Melee, but you could replace the Magic based factors with the Stamina and Melee based factors in the following calculations: (Warning, your eyes may start to bleed)

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.
