HELP! English Speakers

I am gonna join the PC server in a week, I'm most inclined to choosing the EU server since it gives me better connection as I've experienced with ps4 eu but a major problem might be with the amount of English speakers. I wanted to know if the majority of EU players speak English or at least can understand full (semi complex) sentences? It would be awesome if some of you folks on PC could help me with my queries and shed some light with your own experiences. It would be a huge communication problem if most eu players don't speak English, I might have to choose NA due to that reason, and suffer from immense lag XD

Bonus question: do you guys think the game is declining in population? I haven't played in about 7 months now

Yes, the vast majority of EU players speak, or at least understand, English.

You'll always get people preferring to speak in their native tongue, and there'll be the 1% who can't understand English, but it won't impact on your experience.

Most people on the EU servers speak English, even if it's not their native tongue they will be able to communicate fine with you.

Any multi-national guilds normally have an English only rule for their guild chats and you'll more often see English used in zone chat. There are of course other language based guilds who recruit and will have their adverts or conversations in zone in their native language but this isn't really an issue.

I don't think the game population is declining either, I have recently started a couple of new characters and the 1-50 zones are still populated as well as most PvP campaigns reaching high levels of demand during peak times. There are also several large trade guilds which have inactivity kicks and they tend to stay steady at 450+ members.

Seriously, do you think Europeans are some kind of cavemen? We actually have schools, and English is taught as a second language in a lot of countries (if not in all, not sure). Almost everyone speaks and understands it to some degree. Of course there are language specific guilds, but it's not like those people don't speak to anyone else...

Yesterday I was in a group in Asura's Star, the lead was French, had no issue.

It is Europe, so, people are bound to speak other languages, but English is a really easy one to learn, so, to some degree, most of the players will be able to express themselves. To what degree it will make your experience painful, only you can know that, but the moment you join a guild and do activities with them, shouldn't be an issue anymore.

    IMHO.

On an unrelated note, if you plan to join Asura's Star (no CP campaign) please make a DC char... or AD, AD is good too, just, not EP... please, there are way too many of them :)

I play PC EU servers and the main language used there is english, although you can choose to join german or french chat channels (zone chat is in english most of the time, exept if a french/ spanish/german etc. only guild ad is up or things like that). However, as you seem to know already, non-natives english tends to "sound" a little odd for native english speakers. You will have to deal with slightly odd grammar, awefull spelling and funny word creations ...

Just like in the rest of the world european people tend to understand full sentences, however, they might still not follow your logic.

Population is fine, cadwells silver and gold zones are not overpopulated while the rest is fairly (new DLCs, some campaigns, hot-spot citys are heavily) transited.

Unlike Great Britain and America, the rest of the world actually speaks at least two languages :-)
If you don`t, you are pretty much cut off from a lot of stuff, especially in the gaming-community.

As an austrian myself I can safely say, most of us gamers speak english as a second language.

No unfortunately here in Europe we have neither schools nor education. Most people are happy when they manage to communicate with each other when they speak the same native language. In zone chat people always use their native language and write with bad grammer, that causes huge problems as there are about 23 different official languages in Europe and nobody understands each other. It's chaos... I really wouldn't recommend to play on this server.

To the OP: come over, you'll be fine

Many of us learn English as a second language and speak it fluently enough, and most of zone chat is in English - as somebody wrote above, you'll usually only see a foreign language on /zone if a guild is recruiting, but it's just a few lines of text.

I have not noticed a decline in population, either.

Most of the world's population speaks english, at least as 2nd language - you won't have problems at all. Population is good on PC EU servers, it seems to increase even. And in Europe a lot speak more than 2 languages, due to being that near to their neighboring countries. Think of Switzerland for example - they have 5 languages inside their own country - german, swiss german, french, italian, raetho-romance. But all learn english in school, it is the language of worldwide business and science.

You guys didn't have to take my words that way. And there isn't any need to be sarcastic and act like I don't know anything.
As I mentioned in my original post I have played my fair share of eso on ps4 eu. I was a guild leader for one of the biggest guilds too and so I had a lot of interaction with many people. I found that lots of people wouldn't understand the guild's daily message and it was really frustrating because it was difficult to coordinate guild events or ask guild members to do things if they didn't understand English sentences. Mostly it was the French who didn't understand English but some of them were awesome people, they would use google translate to try to understand but I know it's really difficult to do that every day for the daily message. You're acting like I think there are no schools in EU and that im totally ignorant about EU. fact is I know dozens of people from Europe and have been there many times before and I know there's a problem with English and not *everyone* speaks it fluently. Not all schools teach English either and not all people on the EU server are from Europe. Didn't mean to offend anyone before and nor do I now. Thank you

Well, french are a special case - I made that experience as well with french people in second life. Some have a really hard time with english, especially when they have to speak it and not just read and write it. Maybe it is an aversion against the language, which makes them not practice it that much - a lot of the words are really hard to pronounce for them, so they might be less likely to practice it, if they don't have to - this is at least my guess.

To expect proper grammar is a bit too much asked for, IMO. Look at yourself - "I am gonna join" that is not spoken english at all - normal would be "I'm going to join" - but you write out the "am" and shorten going to to "gonna" - that isn't english.

Well, english is as diverse as german - the actual spoken language I mean - there is high german, but pretty much no one speaks it, even all can understand it. Pretty similar with english, there is queen's english, all can understand it, but nearly no one speaks it. when I lived in London, I could estimate from how people pronounced words, in which part of London they were brought up - if they are Londoner at all. English has a wide spectrum of colors in it's actually spoken language - well most languages have that, I guess.

Well, the south african stand-up comedian Trevor Noah - who runs the daily show now - had these different forms to pronounce words in one of his comedy shows - it's quite funny - he speaks a very good english, IMO, even he grew up in Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa.

As a member of eXile and formally having a guild leader from Manchester I am pretty sure you should be aware that what is considered "English" is very broad these days.

Well, english is as diverse as german - the actual spoken language I mean - there is high german, but pretty much no one speaks it, even all can understand it. Yeah, it's called "dialects"

In my language (Dutch), you have the 5 Belgian dialects with a few subcategories in there. Then there's the dialects from the Netherlands (only know Zeeuws and Hollands) and finally there's True Dutch which you only find in dictionaries

Also, speaking of Belgium, we're a multilingual country. Top half (Flanders) speaks Dutch (or Flemish: the 5 dialects), bottom half (Walloon) speaks a version of French (there's differences with actual French, example being Nonante which means "90", is Quatre-Vingt-Dix in actual French) and there's a part of Liege that used to belong to Germany where the people still speak German

That's the lesson for today :D

Haha yeah  got used to it pretty fast though. But that guy from Scotland that was on TS one day...

OP I admit my wording was a bit harsh, but yeah. You can fairly assume that upwards of 90% of the people will understand you, apart from the frenchies maybe
