Gap closers

Hi Zos,

Gap closers should serve one purpose and that is to close a gap. My issue is the damage some gap closes can put out coupled with a large range making it impossible to kite in any way. In fact if I try open the gap up with an opponent I get instantly punished over and over till I'm dead. Is there a counter to this? And should gap closer mechanics be changed?

Gap closers shouldnt snare you, if youre too far away when they hit gapcloser on you it should fail, simple as that, if they cant make sure to stay close enough to you to gap close or manage to keep up with you...then so f be it, their fault, why should you be punished for it.

IMO, melee range should wreck. If a caster gets someone up in their face they are going to get hurt, but with this current gap closer system melee are essentially ranged attackers except it's not a fireball or an arrow, it's some mad *** with a mace that can't be kited away.

I would think the counter to the gap closer doing so much damage would be too block it.other than that I haven't seen a way to counter it. It's hard enough to get space again after a gap is closed unless you stealth away or bolt/streak.

The ranged vs melee dynamic is an utter joke in this game simply due to the free form, no CD nature of eso's combat system.

Naturally in most mmos, the finesse in said dynamic came from timing your options against your opponent or making them blow a valuable skill at the wrong time to allow you to make range / close the gap. That makes for some very exciting back and forth sew saw bouts.

"Has he used skill x yet?, can I capitalize on a gap closer if I use it now or does he still have is second option available?"

"Should I use skill x now to get distance? Does he have his gap closer available? Should I make him commit to it and use my second option (defensive cd or something) available?"

Situations like those do not exisit in eso, the only thing to assess are concerns intrinsically tied to resource management, which at the highest eschalon is almost a non factor and it's why I really think poisons are going to shake things up in thst department.

But still, it's a resource race. Skills like deadric mines and volcanic rune can sort of be used as a deterrent to melee range but that still boils down to who runs out of resources first.

Proper ranged builds only work in an environment where you are not targeted by other players, environments like cyrodil zerg balls where your "skillful ranged play" is totally helping the cause...

Or if you can somehow kill a target in an opener from range before an actual fight is created.

As it is now, gap closers as they exist in eso will always make skillful ranged vs melee back and forth play non feasible.

The counter to gap closer spam is to have someone peel for you or to outlast there resource. Gap closer dead zones should be a thing as well, couple that with a snare and you a potential counter to it.
