Improving PVP performance: Alliance Uniforms

One of the main reasons for the poor PVP performance and framerate, in my experience, is the amount of characters that are loaded on the screen. This is a performance issue in any crowded area of the game, but the fast pace of PVP combat makes it far more aggravating.

Many MMOs out there have a couple of way to improve performance. One of the most notable ones is to restrict character customization to four or so body types. Of course, that doesn't fit ESO, but there's an alternative I thought about:

Alliance Uniforms. A cosmetic override of your current armor, proudly showing your alliance colors.

If all characters in PVP wore the same outfit, the server and client would not need to load hundreds of armor meshes and textures, instead, just load the character customization and a handful of outfits. (Perhaps you could have three cosmetic options, based on what type of armor you're wearing)

This could potentially improve the gameplay experience as well, as all players would be wearing their corresponding colors.

What do you think? Could this work in ESO? Would it be a worthwhile change, or just make us look less fashionable?

I remember certain guilds that all used the same outfit in the past, and fighting them caused way more lag than fighting a similar sized group that didn't wear costumes. Could have been a coincidence, but I'm not sure if your suggestion will improve performance at all.

That... doesn't sound right. That is, unless they chose a outfit that was particularly heavy resource-wise.

I don't know the technical aspects, but loading less armors would naturally lead to better performance. And if such a thing was implemented, it would be purposely lightweight.

It would be awesome if you gave reasons to either support or refute this idea. It's called discussion.

I think the reason he still lagged is because the calculations from people using a bunch of skills (especially AoE's and DoT's) which is usually what guilds do, contribute a lot more to the performance issues than armour models

    No.

Lag isn't caused by 10s of people being together being on screen looking #swag, it's caused by everyone simultaneously button mashing, firing off AOEs and animations.

Get 40 people together and go to some far away place in the middle of nowhere, strip off and fight. I'm sure you'll still experience lag.

I suggested this months ago, and got a response from Wrobel saying that this would help a little bit with client load, but not with the server lags.

The Secret World had this and it did nothing to help performance there . Also, I'm not a fan of uniformity .
